Global law firm K&L Gates LLP has added two new partners in its Asia practice. Corporate lawyer Ian Liao joins K&L Gates’ Shanghai office from Jones Day, while disputes lawyer Glenn Cheng — who arrives from Nabarro LLP — is based in the firm’s Singapore office.
Focusing his practice on mergers and acquisitions and venture capital deals, Liao represents public and private companies in their M&A, divestitures, and equity purchase transactions and concentrates on cross-border technology transactions. He has significant experience advising in the Internet and e-commerce space and routinely acts for high-tech companies including start-ups and pre-IPO stage companies on their fundraising activities. Liao also represents clients on cross-border technology licensing and intellectual property enforcement matters.
Cheng’s practice focuses on cross-border arbitration in the areas of construction, oil and gas, civil and marine engineering, on- and off-shore infrastructure, general engineering, and building projects. He offers a hybrid range of front-end transactional to back-end disputes service disciplines. Cheng maintains regular involvement in projects, contractual claims, and formal dispute proceedings variously as advisor, counsel, and arbitrator. He also acts for operators, rig owners, drilling contractors, joint operating agreement stakeholders, shipyards, designers, and support services contractors throughout the Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific, and Middle East regions.
