Former US Senator Saxby Chambliss joins DLA Piper as partner

DLA Piper announced today that former United States Senator Saxby Chambliss has joined the firm as a partner. He will be based in the firm’s Atlanta office and will advise clients across the country.

Senator Chambliss served two terms as US Senator from Georgia and, prior to that, was elected to four terms in the House of Representatives. During his 20 years in Congress, Senator Chambliss was involved in several major areas of legislative and regulatory policy, with a particular focus on issues related to national defense, homeland security, cybersecurity and agriculture. He most recently served as vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee; the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry (former chairman); and the Senate Rules Committee. Senator Chambliss’ experience with security issues dates back to his previous role as chairman of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security.

“Senator Chambliss is deeply respected in Washington and abroad and has extensive relationships among government and corporate leaders, which will be an asset in our continued work across disciplines and industries around the world,” said Roger Meltzer, global co-chair and co-chair (Americas) of DLA Piper. “His insight and guidance will be of tremendous value to clients with pressing global interests, before the new Congress and within the constantly changing regulatory and public policy environment.”

At DLA Piper, Senator Chambliss will counsel clients on a wide range of issues at the intersection of law, policy and business.

“Senator Chambliss arrives at a time when his experience in cybersecurity, national defense, and homeland security place him at the nexus of how government and business are addressing domestic and global threats,” said Ignacio Sanchez, co-chair of the firm’s International Trade, Regulatory and Government Affairs practice. “His reputation and knowledge, coupled with the firm’s strong regulatory and policy capabilities, will be a tremendous resource to our clients.”

“With a distinguished and diversified career in public office, Senator Chambliss has garnered praise for his bipartisan efforts and working across the aisle,” said Joseph Alexander, Southeast US managing partner of DLA Piper. “His impressive public service credentials will certainly resonate with local, national and international companies and enhance the overall presence of the firm in the Southeast region.”

Senator Chambliss is the latest former government official to join the firm this year, following Secretary Ray LaHood, former secretary of the US Department of Transportation; Bart Chilton, former commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC); Elizabeth Ritter, former CFTC chief counsel; Sheila Bair, former chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; and Kathryn Keneally, assistant attorney general for the Tax Division of the US Department of Justice.

“DLA Piper’s global platform and international network is the ideal setting for my return to private legal practice,” said Senator Chambliss. “I am excited to join the firm and look forward to working with its expansive and diverse client base as they confront a range of business-critical issues.”
