John A. Thomson, Jr., is now practicing with the law firm of Adams and Reese in the firm’s Atlanta office as a member of the Banking and Financial Services practice team. Within three months, Adams and Reese’s Atlanta office has grown from the original three founding partners, Ron C. Bingham, II, who leads the Atlanta office, Bryan E. Busch, and Matthew B. Norton, to nine attorneys.
The lawyers in Adams and Rees’s Atlanta office are collaborating with other members of Adams and Reese’s banking and financial services practice team to represent a number of the firm’s financial institutions and community bank clients.
Thomson, a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, has more than thirty years of experience as a commercial litigator and bankruptcy attorney. He has represented a wide variety of clients in matters related to commercial finance and debtor/creditor issues over the course of his practice, including banking institutions, indenture trustees, life insurance companies, commercial trade creditors, trustees, private equity investors and purchasers of distressed debt. In addition, Thomson has from time to time represented commercial debtors and committees of unsecured creditors. Thomson has regularly been recognized by Best Lawyers in America, and has been designated a Georgia Super Lawyer for more than a decade.
His bankruptcy practice encompasses both bankruptcy litigation and adversary proceedings, as well as work related to transactions for the sale and disposition of distressed assets in bankruptcy. Thomson’s commercial litigation practice has included cases arising out of breach of contract, shareholder disputes, valuation of real and personal property collateral, the appointment of receivers, declaratory judgement actions related to bond issues, leases of commercial property, real estate development ventures, and the disposition of collateral for commercial loans. In addition to his bankruptcy and litigation work, John regularly coordinates the workout or restructuring of distressed commercial debt obligations, particularly with regard to distressed bond issues.
Thomson has earned his certification from the American Bankruptcy Institute’s mediation training program at St. John’s University and is a qualified mediator and helps to resolve disputes arising out of bankruptcy and creditor’s rights matters.
He has devoted considerable time and energy to the bankruptcy bar since he began his practice in Atlanta. Thomson has served as Chair of the Atlanta Bar Association Bankruptcy Section (2013-2014), as well as former President and Chairman of the Board of the Southeast Bankruptcy Law Institute (2015-2017). In addition, he is a Master of the W. Homer Drake Inn of Court. Thomson graduated from Davidson College in 1981, and the University of Georgia School of Law, cum laude, in 1986, where he served on the Law Review.
