Lewis Brisbois has grown its Toxic Tort & Environmental Litigation Practice in Atlanta, bringing on accomplished environmental law attorney Martin A. Shelton as a partner. Mr. Shelton brings nearly a quarter century of experience counseling clients on the environmental issues involved in real estate transactions, Brownfield remediation and redevelopment, regulatory compliance, and litigation. Shelton joins the firm from Weissman, Nowack, Curry & Wilco, P.C. in Atlanta.
Mr. Shelton has a deep understanding of environmental regulation, including issues associated with hazardous waste sites and facilities under the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, aka the Superfund law) and related state laws, environmental issues in real estate transactions, Brownfield redevelopment, as well as compliance and permitting for dams, storm water, wetlands, and hazardous waste issues. He has extensive experience in trial and appellate litigation of environmental claims for both plaintiffs and defendants regarding hazardous waste (RCRA/CERCLA), water pollution and Clean Water Act regulation, dam regulation, and natural resources.

Mr. Shelton is active in both the legal community and Atlanta community in general. He is a member of the environmental practice sections of several bar associations and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Augusta-based Savannah Riverkeeper, Inc., which operates along the Savannah River in both Georgia and South Carolina. Mr. Shelton has been named a “Georgia Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics Magazine multiple times since 2010. He is also an active volunteer with various community organizations.
Mr. Shelton is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received his law degree, cum laude, from Georgia State University College of Law. He is admitted to practice before the trial and appellate courts in Georgia, Washington, and the District of Columbia, as well as the United States Supreme Court, the District of Columbia and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeal, and federal trial courts in Georgia and the District of Columbia.
