Troutman Sanders Adds Partner with Significant CFPB Experience to Government Investigations, Compliance and Enforcement Practice in Atlanta

Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that Keith J. Barnett has joined the firm’s Government Investigations, Compliance and Enforcement Practice as a partner in the Atlanta office. He joins the firm from Sutherland Asbill & Brennan.

Barnett is a seasoned compliance and government enforcement lawyer with more than a decade of experience representing clients before government regulators, including the CFPB, CFTC, FDIC, and SEC, as well as industry regulators, such as FINRA. His practice is focused, in particular, on matters involving enforcement actions by the CFPB. He advises banks and nonbanks in connection with CFPB examinations and civil investigative demands from the CFPB. He also represents companies in class action lawsuits alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Barnett has co-authored a book entitled A Practice Guide to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Regulation, which was published by Westlaw. He lectures extensively on trending topics in the financial services industry.

“With our long-established practice representing bank and non-bank clients in complex consumer financial services litigation, enforcement and compliance matters, Keith is a great strategic addition to the firm,” said Pete Robinson, Managing Partner of the firm’s Atlanta office. “In particular, his significant experience handling CFPB enforcement actions will be of tremendous value to clients.”

“Keith has developed a recognized profile in the expanding area of CFPB enforcement, with a track record of successfully representing clients in regulatory compliance and enforcement matters, as well as publishing a definitive book on the agency,” said Bill Withrow, a Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “His practice complements our deep financial services bench, including with regard to class action litigation and state Attorneys General investigations.”

Barnett received a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a J.D. from Duke University School of Law.

“I am excited to join Troutman Sanders,” said Barnett. “The firm is a perfect fit for my practice. With broad-based financial services industry experience, a strong Attorney General enforcement practice and offices in key markets, Troutman Sanders provides an ideal platform for me to continue to expand my practice and meet the diverse needs of my clients.”
