Villarreal has joined the firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property Department in Austin. He joins Baker Botts from the Austin office of Perkins Coie, which he helped open in February 2020 and where he served as the founding office Managing Partner. Before that, he was a partner at Wilson Sonsini for over 15 years.
As lead counsel for major technology clients Villarreal has a history of successful patent-related representations. He has 25 years of experience litigating primarily in the Western District of Texas, Eastern District of Texas, District of Delaware and California Federal Courts. With a Master’s in Electrical Engineering and prior tech industry work, Villarreal’s litigation experience spans across a broad spectrum of technologies, including diagnostic devices, semiconductors, networking communications and security, SAS and CRM software, electric vehicles, financial software, and gaming software.
In addition to being a highly experienced patent litigation and trial attorney for technology and growth enterprises, Villarreal also advises clients regarding IP transactional matters, including strategic intellectual property portfolio management and licensing.

Villarreal earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated cum laude in 1997. He also received a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in 1998 and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida, where he graduated with high honors.
