The Firm represented the Stephen A. Schwarzman Education Foundation in connection with the creation of a $300 million scholarship fund for study at Tsinghua University in Beijing and the creation of Schwarzman College at the University. The program, whose endowment represents one of the largest single gifts to education in the world and one of the largest philanthropic gifts ever in China, was announced by Mr. Schwarzman in Beijing on Sunday. The gift, also announced on “Face the Nation,” was the subject of an article in Sunday’s New York Times and was the national headline news in the prime-time news programs by all Chinese state-run TV stations.
The Simpson Thacher team working on this project included lawyers from the Firm’s Exempt Organizations Group, principally Jennifer Reynoso, Lisa Freeman and David Shevlin, with assistance from Laura Twomey of Personal Planning, Tony King of Real Estate and Doug Markel and Yang Wang in Beijing.
