McGlinchey Stafford is proud to welcome former Assistant U.S. Attorney James R. “Jim” Sturdivant as a member (partner) in the firm’s Birmingham office. As part of the Government and Internal Investigations team, he aggressively represents clients in high-stakes white collar litigation and helps them prepare for and navigate state and federal investigations. Jim is the 22nd attorney and seventh member to join McGlinchey in 2021.
“I am thrilled to join McGlinchey’s sophisticated nationwide Investigations practice,” Jim said. “I look forward to bringing my background and experience to bear and making a significant contribution alongside the phenomenal attorneys on this team.”
Jim focuses his practice on helping companies and individuals navigate government investigations, prosecutions, and regulatory actions, including preventive consulting, internal investigations, investigation management, negotiations, and litigation defense. With an LL.M. in tax law, Jim is skilled at advising on matters related to securities fraud and related allegations.
“As the frequency of government investigations and enforcement actions increases, our clients will reap the benefits of Jim’s experience as a former federal prosecutor and his familiarity with regulated industries,” said Robert Driscoll, co-chair of the Government and Internal Investigations team.
Jim joins from Dentons Sirote PC, the entity created by the June 2021 merger of Dentons and Alabama law firm Sirote & Permutt. Jim led the firm’s White Collar and Government Investigations team in Alabama. Prior to that role, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and as an attorney and Judge Advocate for the General’s Corps of the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
“Jim is well respected by colleagues and regulators alike, and he is a fantastic addition to our powerhouse team as we move #McGlincheyForward,” said Dan Plunkett, co-chair of the Government and Internal Investigations team.
Regularly recognized by Best Lawyers and others as a leading lawyer for white-collar matters, Jim earned his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1987, and also holds an LL.M. in tax law. He received his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University.
“We are delighted that Jim is joining our team in Birmingham,” said Chris Bottcher, member and office managing attorney of the Birmingham Office. “As our presence in Alabama grows, Jim significantly enhances our ability to serve clients in the financial sector and other highly scrutinized industries.”
