McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Albert L. Sokol has joined as a partner in the Corporate & Transactional Practice Group in the Firm’s Boston office.
Mr. Sokol has nearly 40 year of experience representing a variety of public and private technology and life sciences companies in cross-border and multinational deals. He also represents businesses and investors in a wide range of matters, including venture capital and private equity investments and transactions, general corporate counseling, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), collaborations, spin-offs, strategic alliances, licenses, and executive compensation issues.
“Al is considered a premiere thought leader in life sciences and technology. These two sectors at the center of McDermott’s ongoing strategic growth enjoy great synergy with our number one-ranked healthcare practice,” said Ira J. Coleman, chair-elect and global head of McDermott’s Corporate & Transactional Practice. “We represent many of the world’s leading life sciences and technology companies, and Al is a valuable addition to our growing team that provides best-in-class counsel to these dynamic industries with complex and sophisticated legal needs.”
“Al has a longstanding and distinguished reputation in the life sciences and technology industries locally, nationally and abroad,” said Byron S. Kalogerou, chair of the Firm’s Life Sciences Industry Group and head of the Boston Corporate Transactions group. “With decades of experience counseling a wide spectrum of life science companies, Al brings tremendous background and expertise to our clients around the globe.”
Mr. Sokol continues McDermott’s hiring trend in the Corporate & Transactional Practice group on the heels of experienced M&A partner, David Lipkin, who arrived in the Firm’s Silicon Valley office in early October. Other notable Corporate & Transactional hires in the recent months include New York partners Robert Goldstein, Frank Steinherr, Daniel Martin, Gary Emmanuel and Jeremy Dickens. The hiring trend extends overseas as well with Alicia Videon, Piero Carbone and Michael Holter as the latest additions to the Firm’s London office. At the same time, the Boston office is also experiencing growth momentum with recent additions that include the return of former Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Robert J. Cordy and leading data privacy and cybersecurity attorney Mark Schreiber.
“I am delighted to be joining the Firm,” said Mr. Sokol. “McDermott’s life science and technology capabilities, coupled with its industry-leading practices and strategically configured office footprint, will provide a robust full-service platform for my clients.”
Mr. Sokol regularly speaks on international panels such as various BioEquity conferences in Europe and BIO in Boston, and writes and has done webinars on leading issues and developments important to the life sciences and technology communities. For years, he has been a member of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, the European Venture Capital Association and the chambers of commerce of France, Australia, Sweden, and the UK. Mr. Sokol received his JD from Boston University and his BA from Yale University.
