Pepper Hamilton announced today that Callan G. Stein has joined the firm as a partner in the Health Sciences Department, resident in the Boston office.
Mr. Stein focuses on white collar criminal defense and internal investigations, corporate and commercial civil ligation and health care litigation. He represents health care providers charged with, or being investigated for, criminal and civil health care fraud and abuse, including violations of the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statutes, HIPAA and the Stark Law, as well as Medicare and Medicaid fraud claims. Mr. Stein also represents health care facilities, providers, practices and medical staffs involved in third-party payor disputes, utilization review management issues and medical staff credentialing issues.
“Cal’s significant health care litigation and white collar defense experience make him a perfect fit for our interdisciplinary Health Sciences Department,” said Thomas M. Gallagher, member of the Leadership Team of the Health Sciences Department and past chair of the White Collar Litigation and Investigations Practice Group. “We are thrilled to welcome him to Pepper and are confident he will bring exceptional value to our diverse health care client base.”
Mr. Stein regularly defends clients accused of, or being investigated for, alleged white collar crimes, including state and federal False Claims Act violations, health care fraud and abuse, securities fraud, mail fraud and wire fraud, racketeering and RICO violations, and violations of food and drug laws. He conducts internal investigations for corporate clients and defends companies and individuals during all stages of the criminal process, including responding to government requests for information that typically signal an active or potential investigation.
“I’m very excited to join Pepper’s Health Sciences Department. The national reputation of the firm in the health care and white collar criminal defense spaces, as well as its multifaceted approach to solving clients’ issues, are a perfect fit for my litigation experience,” Mr. Stein said.
Mr. Stein is the seventh lateral partner to join Pepper in 2018. Before joining the firm, Mr. Stein was a partner at Barrett & Singal. He received a J.D. from Boston University School of Law and a B.A., cum laude, from Brandeis University.
