Jonas Koponen has joined Cooley’s Brussels office as a partner in the firm’s global antitrust & competition practice group. He arrives from Linklaters, where he served as global head of the firm’s antitrust and foreign investment group and as global co‐head of its life sciences and healthcare sector team. Koponen is a highly regarded competition lawyer with a practice spanning complex transactional work, investigations and litigation.
“Jonas is a well‐known and recognized leader in the antitrust bar in Brussels, Europe and globally,” said Jacqueline Grise, partner and chair of Cooley’s antitrust & competition practice group. “Given the growth of our M&A practice – with deals continuing to grow in number, size and complexity – as well as increased antitrust enforcement worldwide, Jonas’ background and comprehensive knowledge of the space will help our team continue to deliver successful results for our current and future clients.”
“Our growing Brussels team is delighted to welcome Jonas as a colleague,” said Alexander Israel, Brussels-based antitrust & competition partner. “His impressive background and reputation will further strengthen our capabilities in the European market and beyond.”
As an international competition lawyer, Koponen represents clients worldwide on merger and foreign investment reviews of M&A transactions by the European Commission and other global enforcement agencies. His representation of clients in investigations ranges from business conduct, such as abuse of dominance, anti‐competitive agreements and practices, to cartel matters and related litigation. Koponen’s experience includes the financial services, life sciences, healthcare, telecommunications, software and information technology industries.
“I look forward to this new chapter as I join Cooley’s robust antitrust & competition practice, and collaborate alongside my new teammates in Brussels and across the firm,” Koponen said. “I’ve been impressed by the firm’s lawyers, continuously growing platform and ability to deliver exceptional results for their clients. This is a pivotal time for Cooley’s clients and for the firm, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Koponen is the latest arrival to strengthen Cooley’s global antitrust & competition capabilities, following the recent addition of Caroline Hobson, who joined the antitrust & competition practice group in London, and Ethan Glass, who joined the global litigation department in Washington, DC. Cooley’s antitrust & competition group is recognized as a top-tier antitrust practice by The Legal 500, Global Competition Review and Chambers USA. The team handles all aspects of antitrust and competition law matters – including counseling, M&A, government investigations and litigation – for organizations ranging from emerging companies to Fortune 500 corporations.
Cooley’s experienced lawyers regularly steer clients through the regulatory review of bet-the-company transactions, government investigations and high-stakes litigation, with a focus on the high-tech and life sciences industries, and bring a transatlantic perspective to craft the most efficient and effective strategy for each client. The firm provides practical and timely representation that enables our clients to manage antitrust risk while accomplishing their business objectives.
