K&L Gates Bolsters Antitrust, Competition, and Trade Regulation Practice With Brussels Partner Addition

Global law firm K&L Gates LLP welcomes Lena Sandberg as a partner in its Antitrust, Competition, and Trade Regulation practice. Sandberg joins the firm’s Brussels office from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.

Leveraging her experience working in both private and public sectors, Sandberg concentrates her practice on State aid and competition law, including abuse of dominant position. She has also worked with State aid involved in corporate tax benefits, including carry forward of losses, capital tax, depreciation, property tax, and parafiscal duties in a number of sectors and European countries.

Sandberg has extensive experience in the energy and environmental sectors, including those related to renewables, gas and electricity production, and transmissions. She has also worked in the electronic communications sector, addressing issues related to telecommunications, the internet, and information technology.

Throughout her career, Sandberg has negotiated with international institutions such as the European Commission and other national competition and regulatory bodies and routinely litigates before European Union (EU) and national courts.

Annette Mutschler-Siebert, co-leader of K&L Gates’ Policy & Regulatory practice area, stated: “We are delighted that Lena is joining our integrated European antitrust and trade team, which will further round out the group’s broad regulatory knowledge with her renowned understanding of State aid matters. Being able to offer support on state subsidies, both within the EU and from outside, has never been more relevant to our clients. We are very much looking forward to working with Lena.”

Sandberg’s arrival follows the addition of Washington, D.C., partners Nate Bolin, Dave Allman, and Vishal Mehta to the firm’s Antitrust, Competition, and Trade Regulation practice earlier this year.

Within Europe specifically, K&L Gates has added Finance partner Torsten Limberg and Intellectual Property partner Daniel Marschollek in Frankfurt, Real Estate partner Thomas Ehrecke in Paris, Finance partner Andrea Spellerberg in Munich, Finance partner Chiara Anceschi in Milan, and Asset Management and Investment Funds partner Hazel Doyle in Dublin over the past year.

Tony Griffiths, managing partner of K&L Gates’ European and Middle East regions, remarked: “Lena joining us opens up significant new opportunities to serve clients in the rapidly developing landscape of State aid complexities, an area in which Lena is extremely knowledgeable. We are delighted that Lena has joined our growing team in Brussels.”

The Antitrust, Competition, and Trade Regulation practice at K&L Gates is composed of more than 80 lawyers throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. The group is positioned in strategic markets around the globe to help clients minimize antitrust risks and ensure compliance, defend or pursue litigation, get deals through regulatory authorities, provide guidance in pricing, distribution, and brand protection challenges, and leverage antitrust and competition laws.
