Squire Patton Boggs is pleased to welcome Monika Kuschewsky as a partner in the firm’s global Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Group, and a member of the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. Ms. Kuschewsky will be based in Brussels, where she has practised since 2000, most recently at Covington & Burling LLP.
Over the past decade, Ms. Kuschewsky has developed a wide range of experience in the areas of data protection, privacy and cybersecurity. She has a particular focus on international data transfers, employee data, vendor agreements and direct marketing. In addition to routinely managing multijurisdictional data protection audits and compliance programs across Europe and globally, she has advised several clients on securing approvals for Binding Corporate Rules (BCR). More recently, she has advised on compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and navigating the challenges of transatlantic data transfers under the new EU-U.S. Privacy Shield and using the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. She also advises on the data protection implications of the use of new technologies, such as the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, geolocation services, mobile apps and social networks. In addition to her media and technology client base, she actively advises in the pharmaceutical and the automotive and transportation sectors, among others.
“I am delighted to be joining Squire Patton Boggs at this watershed moment for data protection and privacy in Europe and globally,” Monika Kuschewsky said. “Given the firm’s data privacy and cybersecurity credentials, its impressive client base and its longstanding presence in Brussels, I look forward to joining the firm’s international team. I am also delighted to be able to count on the firm’s local presence in key markets across Europe, particularly its three offices in Germany given my experience advising on German data protection rules.”
Ann LaFrance, global co-leader of the firm’s Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Group, noted: “The EU General Data Protection Regulation has raised the stakes for corporate boards and management, not only in Europe but around the world. We are expanding our already sizable data protection team given the huge demand from EU and multinational clients in this area. As a recognized EU data protection expert, Monika will be instrumental in leading complex, multijurisdictional projects and addressing the compliance challenges faced by clients in a variety of data-rich industries. Monika will also work closely with our public policy team in Brussels on advocacy relating to GDPR implementation issues.”
Brian Hartnett, office managing partner of Brussels, added: “Our Brussels team continues to grow, with a number of high-profile additions over the last year. Monika will be a welcome addition to our office, particularly given the wide-reaching policy and regulatory implications of European data protection legislation and regulations.”
Ms. Kuschewky is a German Rechtsanwältin, and a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and Betrieblicher Datenschutzbeauftragter (company data protection officer) (GDDcert.). She is co-chair of the International Association of Privacy Professionals’ Brussels KnowledgeNet, a member of the Digital Economy Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union, and General Editor of “Data Protection & Privacy – Jurisdictional Comparisons” (International Series/Sweet & Maxwell), which has just published its third edition. She is recommended in The Legal 500 EMEA and JUVE, as well as Who’s Who Legal: Technology, Media & Telecommunications, having been nominated as one of the world’s leading practitioners in Belgium.
