Harris Beach PLLC Expands Health Care Practice with Addition of Four Partners

Harris Beach PLLC is pleased to announce the expansion of its statewide health care practice with the addition of four partners, namely Julie M. Bargnesi, Patrick B. Curran, Amy Archer Flaherty and Meghann N. Roehl, formerly with the Damon Morey law firm in Buffalo, NY. The transition will take place by June 1, 2015. All four are noted for their medical malpractice defense and representation of hospitals, health care systems, nursing homes, physicians, dentists and other licensed medical professionals throughout Western New York. In addition to their health care services practice, they also bring experience in appellate work, general and product liability, regulatory compliance, governmental investigations, and professional disciplinary matters. The four partners will be joined by two associates, Daniel J. Brady and Jason T. Britt, one senior counsel, Janice A. Barber, four nurse consultants and five administrative assistants, bringing the office up to 30 attorneys and 70 people including support staff.

Julie M. Bargnesi concentrates her practice in the area of health care law and medical malpractice defense, and is an experienced litigator with an outstanding trial record. Ms. Bargnesi is also a registered nurse. She served as the president of The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA),and is the president and founder of the association’s Western New York Chapter. Ms. Bargnesi served as editor of Inside TAANA, the association’s national publication. She is an Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Nursing where she lectures on the legal aspects of nursing. She is also a frequent lecturer at hospitals and universities throughout the United States. Ms. Bargnesi served as co-legal advisor to Advantage, a national nursing publication. She is also a former member of the Editorial Board for Nursing Policy Forum, a national nursing publication. Ms. Bargnesi was a registered nurse at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, where she was employed in the intensive care nursery, caring for premature and critically ill newborns. Ms. Bargnesi was appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to serve on the board of directors of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. She received her JD from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and her BS Nursing, cum laude, from Niagara University.

Patrick B. Curran is a trial and appellate attorney defending matters involving medical malpractice, trucking and motor vehicle accidents, product liability, municipal liability, construction accidents, nursing home claims, class actions, dental malpractice and general negligence litigation. He has served as lead counsel in 70 jury trials resulting in a verdict with more than 90 percent of his verdicts in favor of his clients. He also participates in alternative dispute resolution and has served as an arbitrator on numerous occasions. Mr. Curran was elected National Secretary of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) which is a selective organization comprised of experienced civil trial lawyers. He was a founder and first President of the Buffalo chapter. As an adjunct faculty member of the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School, Mr. Curran created a course entitled, “Technology in the Courtroom.” He is a frequent lecturer for the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and School of Nursing, as well numerous health professional and community groups. Mr. Curran was employed by the New York State Department of Health and served as chief legislative assistant to a member of the New York State Assembly. He received his JD from New York Law School and his BA, cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany.

Amy Archer Flaherty practices in the areas of medical malpractice, health care law and personal injury litigation. She has experience litigating cases in state and federal courts. Ms. Flaherty has also prepared and successfully argued a large number of appeals in New York state’s appellate courts, including the Court of Appeals. The appeals Ms. Flaherty has handled encompass a wide range of issues, including general negligence, toxic torts, medical malpractice, labor law, and special proceedings. Ms. Flaherty also counsels trial litigants on the preservation of arguments and the submission of evidence to ensure appellate review. Ms. Flaherty completed a two-year clerkship at the Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department. She received her JD, cum laude, from the University of Toledo College of Law and her BA from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Meghann N. Roehl concentrates her practice in medical, dental and podiatric malpractice, as well as nursing home negligence and general liability. She tries cases in New York state and federal courts on behalf of her clients. In addition, she regularly counsels clients in the areas of risk management, professional discipline and health information management. Ms. Roehl received her JD from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and her BA from Syracuse University. While attending law school, Ms. Roehl completed a judicial externship with the Hon. Vincent E. Doyle, Jr.
