Seyfarth announced today the arrival of partner Kathy P. Josephson to the Litigation department and Health Care, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals team in Chicago. Josephson joins from the Chicago office of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, where she was a partner in its Insurance and Health Care Fraud Litigation practice.
Josephson represents insurers in both litigation and claims involving health care fraud and abuse. She also counsels insurers in every facet of health care fraud investigations, including billing for unnecessary medical services, unbundling, upcoding, anti-kickback and patient brokering laws, and state licensure laws, among many other areas. While at Katten, Josephson worked closely with Chuck Chejfec, who joined Seyfarth in September from Chicago-based Actuate Law LLC.
“Kathy is a tremendous litigator and trial attorney who brings an impressive insurance fraud practice to the firm,” said James McGrath, chair of Seyfarth’s Litigation department. “As we continue to expand our health care capabilities nationwide, we are thrilled to reunite Kathy and Chuck as a formidable team of litigators.”
Josephson has also successfully represented insurers in litigation, prosecuting claims on their behalf against healthcare providers and others for common law fraud, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), as well as the California Insurance Frauds Prevention Act, and the Illinois Insurance Claim Fraud Prevention Act. In addition, she advises insurance companies across the United States on best claims-handling practices and strategies to reduce fraud exposure.
“Kathy is well-known for her ability to manage complex fraud prosecution cases. She joins a deep bench of talent here in Chicago who represent some of the largest insurers and providers in the Midwest, and nationally,” said Cory Hirsch, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s Chicago office.
“We are thrilled to welcome a lawyer of Kathy’s caliber to the firm. As we grow the commercial litigation services we offer locally, her addition also adds an important skill set in the health care space,” said Tracy Billows, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s Chicago office.
Josephson earned both her J.D. and B.A. from Northwestern University.
“In today’s health care landscape, insurance companies across the country face novel and complicated issues, often leading to litigation. Kathy is a proven winner in the courtroom and a dedicated counselor to both her clients and colleagues,” said Jesse Coleman, co-chair of Seyfarth’s Health Care, Life Sciences & Pharmaceuticals team.
Comprised of more than 160 attorneys, Seyfarth’s Litigation department helps clients with every aspect of their dispute resolution needs, nationally and internationally. The practice covers the full spectrum of litigation services, including trials and appeals in federal and state courts. Earlier this month, Seyfarth’s New York office announced the arrival of three partners, Vincent Sama, Catherine Schumacher, and Daphne Morduchowitz, to its Litigation department and Securities & Fiduciary Duty Litigation team.
