Alston & Bird has bolstered its patent litigation capabilities with the addition of Ted Stevenson as a partner in the firm’s Dallas office. Arriving from McKool Smith, Stevenson is a first-chair trial lawyer and registered patent attorney who focuses on intellectual property and competition cases for a marquee list of companies in the telecommunications and technology industries worldwide.
“Ted is recognized as one of the country’s foremost patent trial attorneys whose extensive trial experience, litigation skills, and sophisticated, strategic counsel will strengthen our already formidable presence in the courtroom,” said John Haynes, Alston & Bird partner and co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group. “He brings superb credentials and an exceptional track record representing many of the world’s leading innovators.”
Stevenson has more than 25 years of experience as counsel in major patent litigations in district courts around the country and as appellate counsel before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Regarded as one of the world’s top IP attorneys in cases alleging competitive violations in patent licensing, he has served as lead counsel in numerous trials and an arbitration adjudicating whether proposed royalties for standard essential patent portfolios complied with fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Among his clients are Ericsson, Nokia, AT&T, and other world class companies who he represents across a broad range of diverse technologies, including wireless, integrated circuits, and enterprise software.
Active in industry circles, Stevenson is a registered patent attorney and member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and Federal Circuit Bar Association. He is also a Master of the Barbara M.G. Lynn IP Inn of Court.
Over the course of his career, Stevenson has earned significant market recognition as a top IP attorney. In 2020, he was honored by Managing IP as “Outstanding IP Litigator – Texas,” and in 2018, he was recognized by Texas Lawyer Magazine as one of the five “go-to” IP litigators in the state. Other accolades include prominent rankings in Chambers USA as a Band 1 IP attorney in Texas and Band 2 nationally.
“Ted is an incredibly well-regarded litigator and exciting addition to our team who opens new opportunities for our clients in resolving mission-critical IP disputes,” said Darren Hauck, partner in charge of Alston & Bird’s Dallas and Fort Worth offices. “He joins our deep bench of high-caliber litigators and other attorneys as we continue to grow the office to address increasing client demand across a number of our practices, including IP.”
Stevenson is the latest addition to Alston & Bird’s Texas practice. In 2020, the firm deepened its footprint in the state by opening a new office in Fort Worth and expanding in Dallas and adding to its litigation and corporate offerings in the oil and gas industry. The hiring continued into 2021 with the arrival of litigation counsel Brandy Manning and corporate counsel Gaye Lentz in Fort Worth.
