Haynes and Boone, LLP is delighted to welcome Energy Litigation Partner Brent Owen to the firm’s Denver office. Brent joins from Squire Patton Boggs, where he spent the last eight years practicing primarily in oil, midstream and pipeline disputes. Brent began his career as a law clerk for Justice Nancy Rice of the Colorado Supreme Court.
Clients turn to Brent to handle tricky commercial litigation disputes with a focus on energy. He often works in high-stakes trials and bet-the-company litigation. Brent has experience in trials in both state and federal courts before judges and juries and in arbitration tribunals.
His achievements include winning a lengthy, contested and complex securities fraud case for a Middle East investor after a trial in the United States that resulted in a $1 million settlement from the aiders and abettors, and a judgment in excess of $23 million against the primary perpetrator.
Brent’s significant other representations include defeating a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction brought by a private equity-backed oil and gas company against a landowner over development by the landowner near the oil company’s well. He also helped obtain a defense verdict for a midstream oil and gas company facing multimillion-dollar claims related to drilling an oil and gas well in Eddy County, New Mexico, following a week-long jury trial.

With the addition of Brent, Haynes Boone has added three litigators in the past two months after adding Kevin Crisp in September and Elizabeth Weldon in October. Brent joins the active and accomplished Energy Practice Group, which includes five lawyers recognized in the Lawdragon 500 directory of standout environmental lawyers. The group also recently put out its annual Borrowing Base Survey, which provides a forward-looking and clear idea of what lenders, borrowers (oil and gas producers) and others are experiencing regarding borrowing base redeterminations in light of the price uncertainty in the commodity markets.

Outside of the office, Brent serves on the scholarship committee of the Daniels Fund, where he interviews high-achieving academics as the charity awards scholarships to 150 students annually.
