Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP expanded its Litigation, Aviation, and Appeals & Legal Issues practices with the addition of Andrew Barr as a shareholder in the Denver office. Barr joins the firm from Cooley LLP where he managed a large docket of civil litigation, regulatory, and arbitration matters.
Barr’s practice focuses on general litigation and appellate matters in commercial and business disputes. He has represented clients facing a wide array of challenges across multiple industries and uses this experience to manage cases efficiently and pragmatically. For example, Barr has represented product manufacturers in regulatory and product-liability disputes; has represented a large video-streaming company in civil, regulatory, and criminal disputes; advised several companies related to misappropriation of trade secrets by former employees; and represented a medical provider related to required payments under the Affordable Care Act.
Barr is a licensed pilot, skydiver, and a self-professed “aviation geek,” with deep knowledge of airplanes and the culture and law surrounding them, all of which inform his aviation practice. His experience in this niche area of law touches virtually all facets of the industry, including airport sponsors, manufacturers, operators, and insurers. Barr currently represents several municipalities seeking to obtain relief from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) related to noise and pollution caused by aircraft overflights. He also has worked with the FAA on the first-ever privatization of a once-public airport, developing the transition process used by the FAA. Barr also has represented several aircraft manufacturers and operators, including by serving as emergency counsel in the event of an incident or accident. Barr has developed considerable cross-border experience through his aviation practice, and industry stakeholders seek his counsel in the wake of international airplane and helicopter accidents.
“Andrew is an enthusiastic, business-focused attorney whose practice will complement the firm’s existing multidisciplinary commercial litigation and aviation law teams,” said David Palmer, managing shareholder of the Denver office. “He exhibits a community-first leadership that is key to building trust with our clients and providing value-added services.”
“I’m excited to join a firm with a robust entrepreneurial spirit, where I have the freedom to grow my practice within the framework of Greenberg Traurig’s global platform,” Barr said. “I’m also looking forward to mentoring junior attorneys and shepherding them through meaningful cases.”
Barr maintains an active pro bono practice, and he is proudest of one case where he helped secure the release of a wrongfully convicted man who had already served 21 years of a life sentence in a Tennessee prison. Barr regularly accepts appellate appointments from the Sixth and Tenth Circuits’ pro bono panels and has worked with an immigrant-focused nonprofit appellate group since graduating from law school. He also is active in the Denver community, volunteering with Food for Thought, a Denver nonprofit committed to feeding children when they do not have access to free or reduced school meal programs.
Barr received his J.D. from Duke University School of Law, where he also received an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law. He is admitted to practice law in Colorado and Illinois.
