Jones Day has announced that Andrea Jeffries and Emily Tait have joined as partners in the Firm’s global Intellectual Property Practice in Los Angeles and Detroit, respectively. In Los Angeles, Ms. Jeffries will add further depth to the Firm’s California Practice. With the arrival of Ms. Tait, the IP Practice launches its expansion into Detroit.
“The addition of these two accomplished lawyers to our Practice — both of whom are leading practitioners in their markets — will further enhance our presence in Southern California and the Midwest,” said Anthony M. Insogna, Chair of Jones Day’s global Intellectual Property Practice.
Andrea Jeffries
“Leveraging two decades of diverse high-tech and pharmaceutical litigation experience, Andrea has an impressive track record as a litigator not only in California but across the country,” said Mr. Insogna. “This broad experience will be valuable to our clients across their varied industries, including to our clients involved in Hatch Waxman and biosimilar disputes.”
Ms. Jeffries focuses her practice primarily on complex IP disputes involving patents, copyrights, and trademarks. She has served clients in a wide range of IP matters in the computer, semiconductor, consumer products, and life sciences industries. In particular, she has considerable experience representing clients in sophisticated patent litigation relating to computer hardware and software, database technologies, and wireless communications. Her life sciences experience includes handling leading-edge issues involving pharmaceutical formulations and medical devices.
“Andrea has produced exceptional results for her clients in highly complex disputes across a number of industries,” said Brian Sun, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Los Angeles Office. “She is well-known and respected in Los Angeles, and is a tremendous addition to our team.”
Following law school, Ms. Jeffries clerked for The Hon. Harry L. Hupp, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. A member of the Los Angeles County and Federal Circuit Bar Associations, Ms. Jeffries has been consistently recognized as one of California’s “Women Leaders in Tech Law” by The Recorder, as one of California’s “Top Women Lawyers” by The Daily Journal nearly every year since 2010, and as a Southern California Super Lawyer for intellectual property litigation. She was selected as one of the “Most Powerful & Influential Women” of California by the National Diversity Council in 2012.
Emily Tait
“Given her cutting-edge IP work for Detroit’s automobile industry, Emily adds firepower to our cross-practice team of lawyers at the forefront of handling the hotbed of legal issues arising for companies in the automotive and autonomous vehicle space,” said Mr. Insogna. “We see a future technology leader in this regard in Emily for not only our U.S. based clients, but also our automotive clients based in Europe and Asia.”
“Emily’s extensive IP litigation experience at an international firm in New York as well as her tenure as the leader of the IP litigation practice group of a highly-regarded Midwest firm, uniquely positions her to assist the Firm’s expansion of the IP Practice into Detroit,” added Mr. Insogna. For over 15 years, Ms. Tait has advised clients on complex patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret issues across a range of technologies, including vehicle diagnostic and calibration software, engine parts, financial technologies, semiconductors, electronics, mechanical devices, medical devices, and consumer products. In addition to litigating cases in multiple jurisdictions throughout the U.S., she has counseled clients on software registration and enforcement strategy and a variety of IP and technology-related transactions, including software licenses and software development agreements, joint venture agreements, and M&A transactions involving intellectual property issues.
“It is very appropriate that Emily is joining the firm in its Detroit office — the birthplace of the American automotive industry and a technology hub for advancements in global mobility solutions,” added Tim Melton, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Detroit Office. “Her diverse experience and connections to the Metro Detroit area further solidifies our position as a leading law firm in this region.”
A member of the Michigan and New York bars, Ms. Tait is a registered patent attorney and has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, among several others. Ms. Tait has been consistently recognized by Michigan Super Lawyers and as a “Top Lawyer” in Detroit in DBusiness. Ms. Tait has served on the Board of Directors for the Federal Circuit Bar Association since 2013. Active in the Detroit legal community, she also co-founded the Michigan Intellectual Property American Inn of Court, and continues to serve as a “Master of the Bench” and member of the Executive Board.
