Dentons Boosts German Real Estate and Tax practice with Two New Partners in Dusseldorf

Global law firm Dentons has bolstered its German Real Estate and Tax practice with the recruitment of David Zafra Carollo and Dr. Dominik Thomer as partners in the newly opened Dusseldorf office.

David Zafra Carollo has more than 10 years’ experience in the structuring of real estate transactions. He recently advised, for example, a US private equity fund on the creation of a pan-European logistics platform and the acquisition of various assets for the platform. Further, he assisted a German real estate fund on the sale of a prominent office complex in Düsseldorf and a pharmaceutical company on the sale and partial lease back of its headquarters in Germany. In addition to his transactional advice, David Zafra Carollo also advises on real estate financing matters. He will join Dentons from Noerr, together with one senior associate, effective June 1, 2019.

Dominik Thomer is an experienced tax lawyer and advisor who focuses on domestic and international transactions in the real estate sector. In his many years of legal practice, he has advised on a series of high-volume portfolio transactions and assisted numerous investment fund companies and foreign investors on their real estate investments locally and abroad. He also advises on preliminary investigations by tax investigators and prosecution authorities in the context of suspected fiscal offences. At Dentons, he will work at the intersection of real estate and tax. Dominik Thomer will move to Dentons from Clifford Chance on June 1, 2019.

Andreas Ziegenhagen, Dentons’ Germany Managing Partner, said: “These new hires support not only our strategy to strengthen our Dusseldorf office, but also our plans to grow our service offering in key practice groups and sectors across Germany.”

Dirk-Reiner Voss, Dentons’ Real Estate Head in Germany, added: “Over the past years, we have strengthened our Real Estate team through organic growth and lateral hires and have successfully built an integrated practice across our German offices. With last year’s addition of transaction partner René Dubois in Munich and the current recruitment of two partners in Dusseldorf, we are now able to serve our clients from any of our German offices on complex real estate transactions.”

Dr. Stephan Busch, Dentons’ Head of Tax in Germany, explained: „We are happy that, from now on, we can include Dusseldorf on our map for tax advice in Germany. Dominik Thomer’s experience in preliminary investigations and fiscal offenses is an excellent addition to our existing portfolio.”

Dentons has ambitious plans to grow the team and establish a full service offering in Dusseldorf. The recruitment of David Zafra Carollo and Dominik Thomer follows the recent hire of compliance partner Dr. Lars Kutzner and competition partner Dr. Florian Wiesner. The Dusseldorf office, which opened in February this year, now comprises six partners and six additional lawyers.

“I am proud to see that our vision for our new Dusseldorf office is attracting so many experienced lawyers. Together, we want to create a real forward-looking environment where a hands-on, entrepreneurial mentality prevails”, explained Andreas Haak, Dentons’ Dusseldorf Managing Partner.
