Expansion in Dusseldorf: Eversheds Sutherland Strengthens its Corporate/M&A and Tax Practices with Two Lateral Partner Hires

Eversheds Sutherland continues its growth in Germany with the appointments of Partners Dr. Werner Brickwedde and Dr. Simon Weppner to its Dusseldorf office. Werner will join Eversheds Sutherland’s corporate/M&A team from Clifford Chance on 01 August, while Simon will join its tax team from Taylor Wessing on 01 September. In addition, Sandro Wiggerich, also from Clifford Chance, will join Werner’s team as a Senior Associate in September.

Werner advises national and international clients in the areas of corporate law and M&A, in particular on cross-border transactions. He recently advised MediaMarktSaturn on its participation in the Russian electronics dealer M.video, the US-based infrastructure fund Global Infrastructure Partners on the acquisition of a 50 % share in Nordsee-Windpark Borkum Riffgrund 2, CK Infrastructure Holdings on the acquisition of ista Group and innogy SE on the acquisition of Belectric Solar & Battery, which specializes in solar systems and batteries.

Simon, a lawyer and tax advisor, advises clients on the tax structure of company acquisitions and investments. His clients include investors and managers of private equity funds and other alternative capital investments. Simon has provided tax advice on numerous significant transactions to clients including Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, REWE and NRW.Bank.

“We are very glad to welcome these two very experienced Partners, Werner Brickwedde and Simon Weppner, to our Dusseldorf office,” said Dr. Alexander Niethammer, who heads the Company Commercial practice group at Eversheds Sutherland in Germany. “With their support, we can strengthen our position in providing cross-border transaction and tax advice from one of the most important German locations for foreign direct investments.”

Werner said: “Recently, Eversheds Sutherland has significantly strengthened its market profile and has achieved impressive growth. The worldwide network and the transatlantic platform make an excellent starting position for further expansion, in particular, of the transaction practice. I am excited to join the Dusseldorf office and to contribute to the firm’s very dynamic development in Germany.”

Simon added: “I’ve been really impressed by the growth of Eversheds Sutherland in Germany and worldwide. I am excited to contribute to the further expansion of the advisory services of the tax practice. The international team has an impressive tax law capability in the USA and integrated service approach in terms of worldwide cooperation with other practice groups within the firm.”

Eversheds Sutherland has been present in Dusseldorf since 2017. Recently, the Dusseldorf office was strengthened by the arrivals of corporate/M&A Partner Dr. Maximilian Findeisen and Christian Becker as a Counsel in the area of insurance law. In May, the growing team moved into its new, larger office premises within the same building located in Königsallee in Dusseldorf. A further expansion of the Dusseldorf office is planned.
