Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its Global White Collar Practice with the addition of Dr. Thomas Helck as a partner in the Frankfurt office. He joins White & Case from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was counsel, and previously worked for five years as a public prosecutor in Munich, prosecuting a wide range of white collar cases including market manipulations, insider trading and tax fraud.
“White collar issues, investigations and compliance continue to pose challenges for our clients in Germany and globally, as fines levied against corporations rise and enforcement activity increases,” said Darryl Lew, who leads the Firm’s Global White Collar Practice. “Thomas is a well-known lawyer in the German market for international investigations and criminal proceedings with more than ten years of experience, and will be a valuable addition to our practice in an important European economy.”
Helck advises clients on internal investigations and requests from regulators, responses to criminal charges such as corruption and breach of trust, and also provides compliance and anti-bribery advice.
“Thomas’ experience, gained from his time as a public prosecutor as well as from his private practice, will enhance our service to domestic and international clients,” said Charles Balmain, Regional Section Head, EMEA Disputes. “Having led investigations from both sides, Thomas has a unique understanding of the public prosecutor that enables him to achieve the best results for his clients when defending criminal or regulatory investigations.”
Partner Oliver Brettle, a member of White & Case’s global Executive Committee, said: “The addition of Thomas demonstrates our commitment to Germany and to our Global White Collar Practice. It follows the expansion of our white collar capabilities in Beijing and Chicago and a number of internal partner promotions; Maria Beguiristain in Miami in 2018, and Jonah Anderson in London and Tine Schauenburg in Berlin with effect from 1 January 2019. Thomas joins a strong global team that recently achieved a landmark acquittal in a New York Court for Richard Usher, a former London trader who was charged with conspiring to manipulate the global Eurodollar market.”
