Linklaters Advises the German Government Before the Supreme Court – Claims by the City of Berlin in the Amount of €450 Million Rejected

The German Supreme Court (Bundesgerichtshof) rejected a claim brought by the city of Berlin, according to which the German government should refinance 50% of the credit guarantees which the city council had used over many years for social housing schemes in the German capital. The city council had already been unsuccessful with a test case brought before the Regional Court (Landgericht) of Berlin in October 2009, and the Higher Regional Court had dismissed an appeal against that decision. The Supreme Court has now denied Berlin’s request for leave to appeal (which would have been necessary to file an appeal before the Supreme Court).

Norton Rose Hires Eight New Partners and Opens in Hamburg

International legal practice Norton Rose LLP today announced that it is opening a new office in Hamburg. Seven lawyers will join the new Hamburg office as partners from DLA Piper, these are: Klaus von Gierke, corporate finance; Ulf Liebelt-Westphal and Jens Suhrbier, energy; Ludger Verfürth, financial services; Uwe Eppler, tax; Frank Weberndörfer, employment; and Flemming Moos, IT. In addition, energy partner Corrado Wohlwend will join Norton Rose LLP in Frankfurt.

Norton Rose Advises Impax on the Planned Acquisition of Conergy’s Wind Development and Operating Business in Germany and France

A European team of international legal practice Norton Rose LLP has advised UK private equity fund Impax Asset Management Ltd. on the planned acquisition of Epuron GmbH’s wind development and operating business in Germany and France. Epuron is a subsidiary of German TecDax-listed solar system manufacturer Conergy AG. The purchase agreement was signed on 9 December 2010. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Davis Polk to Close Frankfurt Office

Davis Polk & Wardwell is to close its Frankfurt office August 31.  The firm explained that the closing was due to resident partner, Patrick Kenadjian’s retirement.  He had planned to retire at the end of the year.  The lawyer who was to take over for Kenadjian left the firm for personal reasons.
