Finding the right position in the legal industry can be a challenge at times, and the condition of the United States economy over the past few years has made this task even more difficult. However, recent openings at top companies are a cause for optimism, and both experienced lawyers and new legal professionals may apply to these positions.
CLOs
A chief legal officer (CLO) is responsible for many different things, and the position requires a diligent, innovative individual who has an extensive knowledge of corporate law and the ability to think quickly in developing situations.
For example, two companies recently hired new CLOs to help deal with their legal operations.
The Wall Street Journal reported both the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and Stewart Information Services had found new CLOs in May 2012. Former SEC employee Robert Colby will move to FINRA, while experienced lawyer John Killea will join Stewart.
“Serving as general counsel for our major underwriters, John is a natural choice for the role of Stewart’s chief legal officer,” said CEO Matt Morris, according to the news source. “As CLO he will be responsible for guiding our company in its decisions and actions to achieve our objectives while protecting the company’s financial, ethical and reputational interests.”
Both of these men have more than 20 years of legal experience, and were appointed to their positions through a combination of proven service and proper networking.
