Arnold & Porter LLP announced today that Robert N. Weiner has rejoined the firm as a partner in the Washington, DC office, having served as Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice since 2010. Weiner also served as Senior Counsel in the White House Counsel’s Office during the Clinton Administration (1997-98) and President of the DC Bar (1995-96).

As Associate Deputy Attorney General, Weiner devoted the last two years to managing a broad docket of work, including overseeing the defense of the new health care law from the outset of the litigation through the recent arguments in the Supreme Court. He also handled sensitive government-to-government negotiations on bank secrecy, and dealt with a wide variety of other legal and policy issues. In 1997-98, Weiner served as Senior Counsel in the White House Counsel’s Office, where he dealt with the legal aspects of critical issues such as global warming, civil rights, financial reform, and privacy.

Through my experience on the health care litigation, I have gained a deep understanding of the complex health care law that affects 17 percent of the U.S. economy. I have also acquired new insights into managing the interactions between government and business in the regulatory arena, in litigation, and in economic decision-making,” said Weiner. “I think my experience will be useful in the firm’s litigation practice and will help me advise clients regarding the new challenges they confront.”
Prior to his move to DOJ, Weiner led the firm’s Litigation and Business Litigation Practice. He also served as president of the DC Bar, as its General Counsel, and as a member of the ABA Board of Governors. He has substantial experience as a trial lawyer and appellate advocate in criminal and civil cases. His experience includes serving as national coordinating and trial counsel in product liability and toxic tort cases involving, among other things, heart valves, pharmaceutical products, lead paint, and diet drugs; representing clients in media-intensive congressional investigations and regulatory inquiries, as well as in confidential, criminal, and disciplinary investigations; and representing the State of Israel in litigation involving national security policies.
