Goodwin Procter today announced that Michael R. Bromwich, former Inspector General for the Department of Justice and most recently the country’s top offshore drilling regulator, has joined the firm as a partner in its Litigation Department, based in its Washington, D.C. and New York offices. As a member of Goodwin’s Securities Litigation & White Collar Defense Group, Bromwich will focus on corporate internal investigations, compliance, monitoring, and white-collar criminal defense. He joins Goodwin from the U.S. Department of the Interior where he was Director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation & Enforcement.
Bromwich assumed leadership of BOEMRE at the personal request of President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, in the midst of the BP oil spill. He led a wholesale reorganization of the agency, developed and implemented a new generation of drilling safety and environmental standards, and became the Obama Administration’s chief public spokesman on offshore drilling matters. Prior to his most recent public service, he was a partner and Chair of the Internal Investigations, Compliance & Monitoring Practice Group at Fried Frank, in both its D.C. and New York offices, where he focused his practice on conducting internal investigations for companies, audit committees, special committees, and special litigation committees, and representing both companies and individuals in white-collar criminal investigations.
Previously, Bromwich served as Inspector General for the United States Department of Justice where he was responsible for conducting independent investigations, audits, inspections, and special reviews of United States Department of Justice personnel and programs. He also served as Associate Counsel in the Iran-Contra Office of Independent Counsel, where he was a member of the government’s trial team in US v. Oliver North, and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where he rose to become head of the Narcotics Unit.

Bromwich received his A.B. from Harvard College, his Masters in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and New York, and before the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District Courts for the District of Columbia and Maryland, the Second and District of Columbia Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
