Alan D. Minsk has joined Lane Powell as a shareholder in the Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group, where he focuses his practice on patent prosecution, patent litigation support, patent portfolio evaluation and the related due diligence processes, due diligence for purposes of mergers and acquisitions, strategic portfolio development and management, patent licensing and the development of in-house patent programs for clients. His prosecution experience includes application preparation and prosecution for technologies that include e-commerce, communications systems, messaging systems, search methods, semiconductor processing, flash memory, imaging arrays, radar, lasers, signal and image processing, neural networks, adaptive control systems, optical computers and wireless data services.
Alan has extensive experience as a patent strategist, concentrating in the development and strategic management of patent portfolios. He has experience with all phases of portfolio building and management, including identifying the strategic goals that support development of a patent program; determining the appropriate level of resources to support the program; strategically focused patent prosecution and portfolio development; portfolio evaluation for acquisition, sale or licensing; and patent litigation.
Prior to joining Lane Powell, Alan was a partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, where he concentrated his practice on the development and strategic management of high-value patent portfolios for telecommunications, consumer electronics, software and e-commerce companies. His experience also includes serving as the Associate General Counsel and Patent Counsel for Openwave Systems, Inc., where he was responsible for the development and management of domestic and foreign patent portfolios, pre-litigation and litigation support, management of outside counsel, due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, and counseling regarding intellectual property issues. Alan also served as VP and Patent Counsel at Intellectual Ventures, where he was responsible for patent portfolio evaluation, acquisition and management during the initial operational phase of the company. He worked closely with founders and other executives to identify patent portfolios of potential value, negotiate their purchase and develop them into assets that could be licensed.
Alan earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, and his M.A. in physics and B.S. in astronomy from University of California, Berkeley.
