Bingham McCutchen LLP has significantly expanded its Investment Management Practice Group with the addition of three partners to its Washington, D.C. office, Thomas S. Harman, W. John McGuire and Christopher D. Menconi. The partners are joined by of counsel Monica L. Parry and Michael Berenson.
Joining from Morgan Lewis’ Washington, D.C. office, the three partners complement Bingham’s recognized global investment management team, bringing significant experience in investment adviser and investment company matters, including registered and unregistered funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and business development companies (BDCs). Harman is a former chief counsel and associate director of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management who brings years of experience as a regulator and in private practice. McGuire, co-author of Mutual Fund Regulation and Compliance Handbook and also formerly with the SEC’s Division of Investment Management, is considered an industry pioneer and leader in ETFs. Like McGuire and Harman, Menconi has significant experience in representing investment advisers and registered funds.
“Tom, John and Chris complement our securities team and will be an immediate benefit to our clients,” said Washington office co-managing partner Neal Sullivan, co-leader of the Financial Services Area and head of the Broker-Dealer Practice Group.
“We expect ETFs and BDCs to continue to grow in prominence in the investment management space, and the addition of Tom, John and Chris, with their experience in these areas, further positions Bingham as an industry leader,” said Bingham partner Roger Joseph, head of the firm’s Investment Management Practice Group and co-leader of the Financial Services Area.
Joining Harman, McGuire and Menconi are of counsel Parry and Berenson. Parry previously served as a senior counsel in the Office of Chief Counsel in the Division of Investment Management and also served as counsel to former SEC Commissioner Richard Roberts. Berenson is a former chief of the Office of Insurance Products of the Division of Investment Management.
Reflecting the breadth and diversity of a complex and dynamic industry, Bingham’s investment management team has experience in nearly every asset class, including listed stocks, fixed income and derivative instruments, emerging market debt and natural resources. Bingham lawyers advise both U.S. and non-U.S. managers, advisers and funds, addressing the needs of investors in financial centers worldwide.
Bingham’s reputation in investment management and its far-reaching and well-coordinated platform attracted McGuire, Harman and Menconi to the firm.
“Bingham is a proven leader in the industry,” said Harman. “The collaboration of their lawyers across the globe in serving clients with sophisticated legal needs appealed to us. It’s a great fit for us personally and for our practice.”
McGuire noted the camaraderie among the Bingham investment management team. “We’ve worked with Bingham over the years and witnessed first-hand the caliber of their work and partnership,” said McGuire.
