Stites & Harbison, PLLC, welcomes Member/Partner Robert Schroeder to the firm’s Atlanta office. Mr. Schroeder is an award-winning former federal prosecutor, with over 25 years of public and private legal experience. His practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, business litigation, and healthcare litigation (including False Claims Act and regulatory and compliance litigation). He will join Stites & Harbison’s Business Litigation and Healthcare Service Groups.
Prior to joining Stites & Harbison, Mr. Schroeder worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, served as an Associate Independent Counsel and lead attorney in Washington, D.C., for Independent Counsel Larry D. Thompson, and was in private practice.

During his career, Mr. Schroeder has handled hundreds of complex investigations, more than 25 appeals, and has successfully tried more than 100 cases. He has also received numerous awards, including the Department of Justice’s Award for Outstanding Service to the Nation. Mr. Schroeder has served as an instructor to attorneys and government officials throughout the United States on a variety of topics, and has received commendations from former President Jimmy Carter, Attorney General Janet Reno, and FBI Director Louis Freeh, among others. He was an adjunct professor of law in litigation at Emory University School of Law, and is active in the Atlanta community.
Mr. Schroeder served as lead counsel for Gambro Healthcare, Inc., and several of its affiliated companies, on a nationwide False Claims Act case that was ultimately dismissed, in which Relators’ (Plaintiffs) claimed $50 billion in damages; was selected by Bankruptcy Examiner (and former FBI Director) Louis J. Freeh to lead his investigation and prepare the Final Report in the multi-billion dollar bankruptcy filing of worldwide energy and commodities trading company; represented the President of the North American subsidiary of a major multinational corporation for allegedly violating U.S. economic sanctions with a foreign nation; was chosen by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals to conduct a confidential investigation for it; and represented the Chief Operating Officer of a large metropolitan hospital in a civil False Claims Act and Racketeering case that was ultimately dismissed, among other significant cases.
