McGivney & Kluger, P.C. is proud to announce that Mr. Bennett has joined the firm as a Partner in M&K’s New York City, Syracuse, and Hartford offices.
Mr. Bennett is an experienced litigator who focuses on admiralty, energy transport/infrastructure, toxic tort, environmental and general liability matters.
Mr. Bennett attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy, graduating with honors, an officer’s commission in the United States Naval Reserve and a U.S Coast Guard license as a merchant marine officer. Mr. Bennett spent several years piloting the largest merchant vessels navigating international trade routes, while upgrading his license to Master. He managed the marine terminal at one of the world’s largest oil refineries, with annual cargo volume in excess of $10 billion. During this time, he received a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of the Virgin Islands. He obtained his Juris Doctor from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center.
Mr. Bennett practiced law in the U.S. Virgin Islands for twenty years, where he represented multinational corporations in admiralty, tort and corporate litigation. He served as correspondent for members of the International Group of P&I Clubs, representing international ship owners/operators in both regulatory and litigated matters concerning OPA, LHWCA, Jones Act and general maritime law. Mr. Bennett’s general liability practice included the defense of Fortune 500 companies in a wide array of litigation involving heavy equipment, automobiles, industrial accidents, power tools, chemicals, recreational watercraft, premises liability, and construction disputes. His toxic tort practice centered on petroleum refinery operations concerning asbestos, mixed dust and catalyst exposures.
Most recently, Mr. Bennett served as Senior Legal Counsel to an international provider of insurance programs for the energy transport and infrastructure industries. In this role, Mr. Bennett provided management and oversight of multi-million dollar environmental remediation projects and litigation nationwide, with a concentration on claims asserted under the New Jersey Spill Act, New York Navigation Law and Connecticut Environmental Protection Act.
