Eversheds Sutherland today announces the appointment of John Siu as a Partner in the Financial Services Disputes and Investigations team in Hong Kong.
John has extensive experience advising global and regional institutions, companies and individuals on regulatory, investigatory and compliance issues. He focuses on highly technical areas including insider trading, fraud and price rigging.
Stephen Kitts, Eversheds Sutherland Managing Partner Asia, commented:
“John’s appointment reflects our commitment to provide clients with high quality counsel and strategies to navigate the increasingly complex regulatory environment. His time at the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission will provide clients with unique insights on how financial regulators approach investigations and enforcement actions. John is a valuable addition to our team.”
John noted: “This year marks the 10th anniversary of the global financial crisis and financial markets and participants are still experiencing its reverberations. Meanwhile, regulators and policy makers continue to deepen their collaboration to prevent a repeat of 2008. New regulatory measures, most of which are slightly adjusted to reflect unique local situations, are developed and deployed by regulators with the aim of tackling perceived and emerging risks.
“Major challenges for clients in 2018 are focused on the growth and speed of financial markets where technology allows transactions to occur in split seconds, new rules for manager responsibility and the importance of compliance as a priority for financial services organisations, at board level and on a global scale. My move to Eversheds Sutherland will support our clients through this ever-changing legal and regulatory landscape.”
Matthew Allen, Global Co-Head of the Financial Services Disputes and Investigations team added:
“Our institutional clients are increasingly juggling the demands of multiple regulators across the world. John deepens the talent pool in our Hong Kong office and will also be an integral part of the wider financial services disputes and investigations team supporting our clients in Washington DC, New York, London, Dubai and Singapore, as well as in other local and regional capital markets hubs. Chinese banks have become major international players in recent years, and Hong Kong remains a key focus for the global team. John’s track record and experience supporting those clients is second to none.”
