Global law firm White & Case LLP has expanded its Global Capital Markets Practice with the addition of Margie Chan as a partner in Hong Kong. Prior to joining Norton Rose Fulbright, Chan worked at the New York and Hong Kong offices of Davis Polk & Wardwell for 11 years.
“Continuing the growth of our capital markets practice in Asia-Pacific, where we have strong and ongoing client demand, is a strategic objective for White & Case,” said partner John Vetterli, head of the Firm’s Global Capital Markets Practice. “Margie’s addition is a clear demonstration that further expansion of our role advising clients on capital markets offerings in the region is a priority for the Firm.”
Chan’s practice focuses on high yield debt offerings, private placement issuances and liability management transactions governed by New York law, English law or Hong Kong law. She advises issuers and underwriters on high yield issuances by issuers in the China real estate sector and a number of other sectors, and also advises on bank and bond transactions. Chan brings more than 20 years of experience and joins White & Case from Norton Rose Fulbright, where she was a partner.
“Margie is one of the few Hong Kong-based high yield lawyers who is qualified in New York, England and Wales and Hong Kong and is also a fluent Mandarin and Cantonese speaker,” said White & Case partner Baldwin Cheng, Regional Section Head, Asia-Pacific Corporate, Finance & Restructuring. “She brings strong client relationships which have exciting synergies with our existing practice in Asia-Pacific and, together with our Hong Kong-based capital markets partner Jessica Zhou, positions White & Case as a leading high yield and capital markets firm in Hong Kong.”
Partner Donald Baker, a member of White & Case’s global Executive Committee, said: “Margie’s addition continues our recent targeted expansion in key practices across Asia-Pacific as we pursue further growth in this important region. Her arrival follows the recent additions in Singapore of capital markets partner Rahul Guptan and project development and finance partners Tim Fourteau and Jamie Franklin; debt finance partners Daniel Abercromby and Clara Shirota in Hong Kong and Tokyo, respectively; tax partner Aldrin De Zilva and international arbitration partner Lee Carroll in Melbourne; and commercial litigation partner Kate Perumal and project development and finance partners Chris Flynn and Tim Kennedy in Sydney.”
