Stephen Chan Joins Dechert’s Corporate Practice in Hong Kong

Dechert LLP, a leading global law firm, is pleased to announce that Stephen Chan has joined the firm in its Hong Kong office as a partner in the Corporate and Securities group. He was previously a corporate partner with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, and joins the firm with a team of associates.

Chan is recommended in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2017, where he is noted for leading the corporate team that advised CMBC International Holdings on its US$1.68 billion proposed acquisition of Quam.

“Stephen is a well-respected lawyer with an impressive background advising corporate clients in Asia,” said Henry Nassau, Dechert’s Chief Executive Officer. “His addition to the Dechert team in Hong Kong further strengthens our commitment to serve clients across Asia and we are proud to welcome him to the partnership.”

Chan focuses his practice on advising on corporate transactions including mergers and acquisitions, private equity, takeovers, restructuring, initial public offerings, REIT listings, H share listings and general compliance matters. His track record includes a number of high-profile global offerings and listings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and he has advised on many major transactions in various industries such as financial services, healthcare, real estates, media, retail and mining.

“We have been very strategic in our global lateral growth this year for the group,” said Mark Thierfelder, Chair of the firm’s Corporate & Securities group. “We have been particularly building our global finance, private equity and M&A capabilities and Stephen is an excellent fit for our clients’ needs.”

“I have been quite impressed with the Dechert team,” Chan said. “There is such a sense of congeniality as well as an entrepreneurial spirit. I am excited to join the firm and I know my clients will benefit from the global platform.”

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University (B.A., 2000), College of Law – London (Postgraduate Diploma in Law, 2001; Legal Practice Course, 2002) and University of Hong Kong (P.C.LL., 2003), Chan is admitted to practice in Hong Kong.

Chan marks the latest in a series of high-profile lateral corporate partners to move to Dechert and join the firm’s expanding global corporate and finance platforms. Over the past year, private equity and finance partner John Markland and corporate private equity partner Ross Allardice joined Dechert’s London office from Kirkland & Ellis and White & Case, respectively; Laurent Faugerolas, a corporate partner who was with Weil Gotshal Manges before forming his own firm also joined Dechert in London, in addition to Paul Fleming, a bankruptcy partner from DLA Piper. Corporate and M&A partner Hamish Walton joined in Dubai, and Philip Butler and David Miles joined the firm’s Global Finance team in London from DLA Piper.
