David L. Burgert, a trial lawyer focused on patent disputes, has joined the Houston Office of global law firm Jones Day as a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice. He was formerly a partner at Houston’s Porter Hedges LLP.
In his 30 years in practice, Mr. Burgert has tried over 50 cases to jury verdict as lead counsel; argued appeals before the Texas appellate courts and the Fifth, Eighth, and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal; and handled arbitrations before panels of the American Arbitration Association, JAMS, and the N.A.S.D. In his IP work, he has represented both patent holders and accused infringers in high stakes and high technology lawsuits, as well as representing leading brands on issues of internet and trademark law. Mr. Burgert also has significant experience with oil and gas matters, securities fraud issues, lender liability cases, and real estate disputes.
“David’s reputation as a top patent trial attorney is well deserved, and his background in oil and gas matters is particularly welcome here,” said Nancy MacKimm, Partner-in-Charge of the Houston Office. “We’re very pleased that he’s chosen to join us, and I know our clients will be too.”
“We’ve built a formidable practice group in our two offices in Texas, which is home to some of the most important IP courts in the country as well as the world’s leading innovators,” said Anthony Insogna, co-chair of Jones Day’s Intellectual Property practice. “David’s arrival strengthens our Texas IP practice and will help us continue to grow.”
A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School (J.D., 1983) and Ohio University (B.S., summa cum laude, 1980), Mr. Burgert has been recognized as a Leader in the Field of Intellectual Property in the State of Texas by Chambers USA and selected for inclusion in Texas Super Lawyers in Intellectual Property Litigation since 2003.
