Akin Gump today announced that Kevin E. Cadwell has joined the firm as a partner in its intellectual property (IP) practice in Houston. Mr. Cadwell, who handles complex commercial litigation matters with a focus on intellectual property litigation, comes to Akin Gump from Reed Smith, where he was a partner.
Mr. Cadwell’s IP litigation work is primarily focused on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and trade dress litigation. He represents clients in a wide range of industries, including energy, technology, pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device, and he has advised clients in trials, arbitrations and mediations throughout the United States. He also works with clients on a variety of issues relating to intellectual property licensing and contract disputes.
“Our intellectual property practice has been at the forefront of high-stakes and cutting-edge issues, and Kevin will help us continue to be a leader in this field,” said Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “He has the kind of subject-matter and trial experience that clients find truly valuable, and I know that he will make an immediate contribution to the success of our IP practice and the firm.”
In addition to his IP litigation practice, Mr. Cadwell works on business litigation and disputes involving a range of issues, including energy-related disputes, fraud claims, contract matters, shareholder and securities suits, and government investigations. In the past, he has defended large corporations in bankruptcy-related litigation and against accounting-related claims for breach of contract and fraud.
“Kevin has substantial trial experience, particularly in IP litigation in the Eastern District of Texas, that perfectly complements our practice’s strengths,” said Steven M. Zager, global head of Akin Gump’s intellectual property practice. “His track record of guiding clients to successful outcomes, whether at the settlement table or in front of a jury, coupled with his outstanding mentorship skills, will make him an ideal fit on our team.”
“Akin Gump’s commitment to enhancing its already robust intellectual property practice, along with its strong roots in Texas, made this move a very easy decision for me,” added Mr. Cadwell. “Operating on a national scale, the firm has a sophisticated platform that my clients will appreciate and that will allow me to expand and grow my practice. I am excited to be here and look forward to working alongside my new colleagues.”
