The global law firm Dentons today named Glenn Ballard, a past president of the Houston Bar Association, as Managing Partner of the Firm’s Houston office. Ballard joins Dentons following a notable career as a litigator with another law firm for more than 30 years.
In addition to leading the Houston office, Ballard will focus his practice on high-stakes litigation matters involving energy exploration, production and delivery. He will also continue to serve litigation clients in other matters including labor, bankruptcy, white collar, environmental and intellectual property.
“Dentons’ Energy practice has grown rapidly and is now one of the largest legal teams in the world dedicated exclusively to this important business sector,” said Mike McNamara, US Managing Partner of Dentons. “Glenn epitomizes Dentons’ pledge to work with professionals who are leaders in their communities, and we look forward to his deep engagement as we continue expanding our Houston team in the years ahead.”
Throughout his career, Ballard has handled complex commercial litigation as a first chair trial lawyer for Fortune 500 companies in a wide variety of industries, including real estate, banking, technology and environmental. He has served as an advisor to several publicly traded companies regarding litigation resolution and avoidance, and he has made board presentations to public companies regarding the settlement or disposition of high-dollar, high-risk cases. As head of the trial section at his former firm, Ballard regularly supervised more than 135 lawyers in eight offices. He has tried more than 30 jury trials to verdict and argued in more than half of the appellate courts in Texas, as well as the United States Courts of Appeal for the Fifth Circuit and the Eleventh Circuit.
“Since opening our Houston office in late 2013, the Dentons team has grown rapidly while remaining focused on providing outstanding service to clients in our energy litigation and transactional practice,” said C. Michael Moore, Managing Partner of the Firm’s Dallas office. “Glenn is an exceptional lawyer with deep roots in Houston who will be a terrific asset to many of our clients across a number of business sectors, and a strong leader for this important office.”
Ballard was president of the Houston Bar Association in 2006–2007 and served as chair of its charitable arm, the Houston Bar Foundation. Under his leadership, the organization launched the Equal Access to Justice Program, which doubled the number of pro bono cases handled by Houston lawyers and received the Tweed Award from the American Bar Association for the most outstanding pro bono program in the country.
Recognized both nationally and internationally for his litigation work, Ballard is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the International Society of Barristers, and is a Texas and American Bar fellow. He received his JD from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 1981 and his BA, cum laude, from Davidson College in 1978.
Dentons’ Energy practice is among the largest and most highly regarded in the world, boasting more than 600 lawyers worldwide and currently engaged by more than 40 governments around the globe, as well as by the industry’s leading oil majors, independents, transportation companies, power generators and utilities, financial institutions and large customers. Dentons was named Energy Law Firm of the year for 2015 by Who’s Who Legal.
