Eversheds Sutherland Welcomes Alexander Choinski as Energy Partner in Houston, Bolstering Firm’s Energy Project Finance and Transactional Capabilities

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce the addition of Alexander S. Choinski as a partner in the firm’s Houston office, bolstering its Global Energy team. With extensive experience in complex cross-border traditional and renewable energy international project finance, project development and related transactions, Mr. Choinski further enhances the firm’s capabilities in Houston and strengthens its presence in the Texas market. Prior to joining Eversheds, Choinski served as Counsel at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP in Houston.

Mr. Choinski has a distinguished career in both private practice and as a former in-house counsel for a major international energy company. He has led multi-billion-dollar mega-projects and middle-market deals across the global energy value chain. His deep experience with high-value matters and profound market understanding will continue driving the firm’s growing energy-focused project finance and development work, which is at the forefront of transformative initiatives in the energy industry.

His proven track record in energy transition projects will support the firm’s market-leading advisory services that help clients to diversify their product lines and adapt to a lower-carbon future.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alex, whose significant domestic and international energy sector experience will provide our clients with thorough and strategic guidance on their energy transactional work,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland. “His well-established presence in the region will be an invaluable resource for both our US and international clients for whom Houston is a critical hub.”

“Alex is a go-to lawyer on complex energy matters. He will provide significant support to our clients on both cutting-edge energy transition initiatives and traditional energy infrastructure projects,” said Partner and Co-Head of Global Energy Thomas Warren. “He is a team player who is also admired for his top-notch client service and ability to establish trusted connections across jurisdictions in this fast-moving area of law.”

For more than two decades, Mr. Choinski has successfully championed the development, corporate and financing aspects of infrastructure projects in many sectors, including clean energy and renewables, traditional hydrocarbon, telecom and transportation. He has successfully worked with investment banks, multilateral development institutions, export credit agencies, corporations and private equity firms on traditional secured/unsecured debt finance, multiple lien financings and tax equity.

Fluent in Spanish, he has an extensive background in cross-border transactions, with a particular focus on Latin America, and advocates before governmental agencies around the world.

He is also highly skilled in leading negotiations for the structuring of complex transactions relating to major capital projects, such as for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, offtake agreements and various other project development agreements.

His experience also includes advising clients on general corporate matters, including corporate governance and formation, joint ventures, asset acquisitions, divestments and restructuring and sustainability matters.

Prior to his legal career, Mr. Choinski gained experience in government advocacy, lobbying and legislative/regulatory affairs, which has proved beneficial to his energy and other infrastructure clients.

Mr. Choinski’s arrival in Houston follows Counsel George Bernhardt who joined the Real Estate Practice Group in Houston in the past year. Also in 2024, the Global Energy team welcomed US Partner Rob Lamkin and six additional US attorneys and elected Atlanta-based attorney Alyssa Walker to the partnership.
