Jones Day Adds Energy Partner James Olson in Houston

The global law firm Jones Day has announced the arrival of James Olson, who has joined as a partner with the Firm’s Energy Practice in Houston. Mr. Olson joins an energy team of more than 200 Jones Day lawyers serving clients in nearly every major energy center in the world.

An experienced litigator and advisor in many areas of energy law, Mr. Olson represents clients before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in administrative hearings and broader agency proceedings relating to rates charged and services provided by interstate pipelines and storage facilities. He also counsels clients regarding the FERC’s regulations for new and expanded oil and natural gas pipelines.

“James is an outstanding addition to our team,” said Kevin McIntyre, who co-leads the Firm’s Energy Practice. “He brings to Jones Day a degree of experience and success in the increasingly important gas and products pipeline sector that is second to none – and that experience spans transactions, counseling, and litigation. We are thrilled to have James join us.”

An energy lawyer for nearly 15 years, Mr. Olson has negotiated service agreements for natural gas and liquids pipelines, and for unregulated midstream facilities. He has also structured natural gas and liquid purchases.

Nancy MacKimm, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Houston Office, said, “Adding an attorney like James demonstrates the extent of Jones Day’s commitment to our energy clients and reiterates our dedication to helping them navigate what is often a challenging legal environment.”

Mr. Olson’s recent matters include representing a large natural gas producer in the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays in a pipeline rate increase proceeding initiated by a major interstate pipeline; representing a crude oil pipeline developer regarding FERC rate and tariff requirements for new pipelines under the Interstate Commerce Act – ultimately obtaining a declaratory order addressing shipper commitments and tariff approval; and representing a Marcellus Shale producer in the negotiation of gas and condensate gathering and processing arrangements.

Added Jeff Schlegel, who co-leads the Energy Practice with Mr. McIntyre, “We are very pleased to have James join us in Houston. He brings a great combination of market-leading experience – in regulatory matters and transactions – that will bring immediate value to our clients throughout the energy sector.”

A board member of the Houston Chapter of the Energy Bar Association, Mr. Olson has been recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. in the Energy: Regulatory category.
