Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C. (Munsch Hardt) recently welcomed Thomas R. Barber as shareholder in the firm’s Houston office. With more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Barber significantly bolsters Munsch Hardt’s construction practice from both a controversy and transactional perspective.
“As the fourth largest market in the U.S., Houston remains a significant part of our firm’s strategic plan. We strive to grow in the areas where we believe our clients will continue to grow, including industries such as energy, real estate and construction.” said Phil C. Appenzeller, Jr., CEO of Munsch Hardt. “Our construction practice has always received tremendous praise from clients, and with Tom coming on board, we will not only be able to provide more extensive offerings in this area, but we will also be able to service clients from all three offices – Austin, Dallas and Houston.”
Tom’s construction practice focuses on representing public and private owners, as well as general contractors and subcontractors, emphasizing the preparation of project design and construction documentation, complex construction case workouts and lien and bond claim prosecution and defense. His experience also spans matters relating to suretyship, including the comprehensive investigation and resolution of contractor defaults at all levels of contracting.
“What attracted me to Munsch Hardt is the firm’s significant real estate and construction practice emphasis and a great culture of collaboration and collegiality.” Barber said.
Complementing his legal practice, Barber currently serves as Chair of the State Bar of Texas’ Construction Section and regularly presents to industry groups, Bar associations and client groups, having presented more than 80 lectures and seminars. Topics range from suretyship, lien laws, and construction contract provisions to sale taxation, dispute resolution and insurance issues.
Tom has received an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review rating by Martindale-Hubbell, has been named to the Texas Super Lawyer list in the area of construction law every year since the inception of this distinction, and has been recognized by Chambers USA and Best Lawyers®. Most recently, Tom was named 2014’s Houston Construction Law “Lawyer of the Year”. He currently serves as Chair of the Construction Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and President of the Texas Construction Law Foundation.
