Charles Hampton, an accomplished trial lawyer who has litigated high-stakes disputes for clients in a wide range of industries, has joined McGuireWoods’ business and securities litigation team as a partner in the firm’s Houston office.
Hampton has two decades of courtroom and arbitration experience, having handled complex matters in state and federal courts throughout the country for clients in the energy, healthcare, insurance and banking industries, among others. His practice covers commercial, construction and securities litigation, arbitration and mediation, as well as healthcare litigation and compliance, and oil and gas disputes. Hampton comes to McGuireWoods from the Houston office of Andrews Kurth.
“Charles is an exceptional first-chair trial lawyer and he will be a great asset to our team,” said Jonathan Harmon, chair of the firm’s business and securities litigation group. “His skill and experience handling complex disputes across multiple industries will have tremendous benefits for our clients in Texas and nationally.”
Hampton’s experience includes serving as co-lead counsel on a team that won a $95 million settlement for a litigation trust in a fraudulent transfer lawsuit against a major telecommunications provider in 2014. The settlement agreement followed a two-week trial in U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina.
Hampton also served as lead counsel for a Fortune 500 company in a contract dispute in which he defeated an attempt to seize the company’s Boeing 767 aircraft. He has litigated numerous contract disputes in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels, including several matters for clients in the oil and gas industry.
“Charles is an outstanding addition to our business and securities litigation team in Houston,” said Thomas M. Farrell, managing partner of the firm’s Houston office. “He has a remarkable record of success representing clients in dynamic industries, including the energy sector, and we’re fortunate to have him with us at McGuireWoods.”
Hampton earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M in 1988 and his law degree from the University of Texas in 1995.
“I’m excited to be joining a powerful litigation team and to be part of McGuireWoods’ continued growth in Texas,” Hampton said. “This is a perfect fit for my practice, and I look forward to contributing to the firm in every way I can.”
McGuireWoods’ litigation group includes more than 500 litigators located across the United States and Europe, including many highly regarded first-chair trial lawyers. Independent authorities such as Chambers USA and Chambers UK rank the firm’s litigation practice and its individual lawyers among the leaders in the field. McGuireWoods was among the firms garnering the highest rankings in the 2016 edition of “BTI Litigation Outlook: Changes, Trends and Opportunities for Law Firms,” earning recognition in all eight litigation categories in the widely read survey. The rankings were based on unprompted responses by the highest-ranking legal decision-makers at large organizations with revenues of $1 billion or more.
