Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright today announced that Jeffrey W. Cottle, an internationally recognized compliance, regulatory, investigations and white collar defense lawyer, has joined as a partner. Cottle comes to Norton Rose Fulbright from Steptoe & Johnson.
Cottle will divide his time between the US and Europe, as he will continue to serve a global client base. He is qualified to practice in the US and is also a Registered Foreign Lawyer in England and Wales. Previously, Cottle has served as senior compliance counsel at major corporations headquartered in the United States, Europe and Australia.
Cottle has experience in all aspects of compliance program design, roll-out and implementation, including training, risk assessment, due diligence on third parties and monitoring/audit protocols. He has also handled compliance-related issues arising in mergers and acquisitions as well as in post-merger compliance integration.
In addition, Cottle’s practice covers counselling on regulatory matters and internal investigations of potential breaches of policy and law, along with the defense of investigations by regulators and enforcement agencies. His practice also spans the substantive areas of anti-corruption, anti-money laundering, trade sanctions and export controls.
Cottle, who has served as senior compliance counsel at major corporations headquartered in the United States, Europe and Australia, comes to Norton Rose Fulbright from Steptoe & Johnson. As in-house counsel, he held the position of Chief Compliance Officer and other senior roles at companies regularly dealing with the most risk-intensive jurisdictions and industries in the world.

Cottle, who received his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law and his BA, magna cum laude, from Georgetown University said:

Cottle served as an active duty and reserve US Naval Intelligence Officer, both in the field and with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, retiring as a Commander. He was decorated for his role in operations in Lebanon, Syria and the Persian Gulf.
