Global law firm Reed Smith has announced the appointment of intellectual property partner Jonathan Radcliffe to its Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation Group in London.
With nearly 30 years’ experience practising in the intellectual property field, Jonathan has built a strong IP practice with a focus on patent disputes.
Jonathan’s practice covers a wide range of technologies, with a particular focus on cases with a high scientific and/or technological content in the life sciences, high tech, and engineering sectors. He has acted on a number of leading IP matters, including: patentability of software, added matter, preventing attempted post-revocation patent amendment, entitlement to patents and inventions, patent injunctions, the trade mark classification system, and the registerability of shape trade marks. He is one of only two English solicitors to have had both a patent appeal and a trade mark appeal in the UK Supreme Court.
Jonathan’s arrival follows that of IP partner Anette Gärtner, who joined the firm’s Frankfurt office in April 2015.
“Our continued ambition is to build our intellectual property litigation capability in Europe, to match the strength and reputation of our work globally,” said Marina Cousté, head of Reed Smith’s European intellectual property team. “Anette Gärtner’s arrival to our German practice last year was a significant step. Now, with Jonathan joining us in London, we are in an even stronger position to offer a truly European IP capability to our clients in Munich, Paris and London, the principal locations for the forthcoming Unified Patent Court.”
Reed Smith’s European IP team includes nearly 20 lawyers across London, Paris, Munich and Frankfurt, advising on patents, trade marks, copyright, design rights, unfair competition, product piracy, intellectual property transactions and information technology.
“Jonathan has extensive experience acting for international clients on multinational matters and regularly advises on multinational disputes,” said James Hultquist, partner and chair of Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property Group. “His strong reputation and experience in this area will be a great asset to our global platform and to the expansion of our European offering.”
Jonathan commented, “I am delighted to be joining one of the very few international law firms with a genuine pan-European patent litigation capability that can also offer a market-leading US practice. Effective patent litigation strategies need to reflect the realities of global competition – I believe that Reed Smith’s patent offering will enable clients to handle their trans-Atlantic and pan-European patent disputes in a way that allows the differences between the European systems and those elsewhere to be deployed to their best advantage.”
