Global law firm Shearman & Sterling today announces the appointment of Michael Mountain as a partner in its Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) practice, based in London. Michael Mountain was previously a partner at White & Case.
Michael advises clients on a broad range of corporate transactions, including M&A, private equity and joint ventures. He has a particular focus on alternative capital providers and special situations.
“Michael’s experience and market profile bolsters our English law M&A capabilities, reinforcing our strong global platform,” said David Beveridge, Senior Partner at Shearman & Sterling. “Michael’s appointment is part of the continued expansion of our corporate offering globally and complements our growing private equity capability. This is a key component of our long-term strategy focused on expanding core practice areas in key geographies, aligning with market opportunities.”
Commenting on Michael joining the firm, Phil Cheveley, Head of M&A in EMEA and Asia, stated: “Michael’s appointment further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to invest in the growth of our London corporate team, and is part of our strategy to expand our M&A and private equity capabilities globally. His practice has synergies with our leveraged finance, restructuring and funds practices which, combined with his strong client relationships, are a great addition to our business. Private equity is an important area for the firm and Michael’s arrival brings additional depth to our London team and bolsters our offering to clients in this market.”
Michael Mountain added: “I am thrilled to be joining a firm with such a strong global platform at a time when there is significant momentum in the London M&A practice and corporate offering more broadly. My practice sits at the intersection of corporate, restructuring and private credit, and I look forward to continuing the expansion of Shearman & Sterling’s capabilities in these areas with clients deploying flexible investment strategies. I look forward to working with Phil and the team across Europe (and beyond) and contributing to the further growth of the practice.”
Michael is the firm’s fifth strategic lateral hire in London this year, following the recent appointment of partners Shameer Shah (Leveraged Finance), Phil Baynes (Funds), Matthew Skinner (International Arbitration) and Maegen Morrison (M&A). Since January 2021, Shearman & Sterling has significantly grown its corporate offering in Europe with the hire of partners Phil Cheveley and Maegen Morrison in London; Xavier Norlain, Jeremy Scemama and Matthieu Lampel in Paris; and Florian Harder and Jann Jetter in Munich.
