Weil Continues Private Funds Expansion with Sophie Smith Hire

International law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP announced today that Sophie Smith has joined the Firm as a partner in London. Smith comes to Weil from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

Sophie specializes in primary fundraisings and advises managers on carried interest, co-investments and other incentive arrangements. In addition, Sophie has significant ESG expertise, as well as advising widely on impact and growth investing.

“As the global private funds market consolidates, clients require increasingly sophisticated private capital advice. Sophie brings exceptional experience in fund formation, particularly in the primary credit funds space. We are delighted to welcome Sophie to the Firm,” said Weil’s Executive Partner Barry Wolf.

“Fund managers turn to Weil for their most complex matters, and Sophie brings an extensive track record, as well as strong relationships with a number of Weil’s existing clients. She is a fantastic addition to our team,” added Ed Gander, Head of Weil’s London Private Funds Group.

Sophie becomes the third new partner in Weil’s 30-lawyer London private funds practice following the recent promotions of Peter Boulle and Jacquelyn Volpe to the partnership. A dedicated focus on internal growth has significantly contributed to the team’s targeted expansion.
