David Barksdale Returns to Ballard Spahr as LA Real Estate Partner

David A. Barksdale has returned to Ballard Spahr as a real estate partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office, firm Chair Mark S. Stewart announced today.

Mr. Barksdale focuses his practice on real estate finance, investment, and development, with an emphasis on loan originations, strategic investments, and distressed real estate transactions. He advises lenders, investors, special servicers, and borrowers on complex real estate debt and equity transactions, the restructuring of distressed real estate projects, and enforcement matters.

Mr. Barksdale has extensive experience with a wide variety of property types, including master-planned and mixed-use developments, retail and office centers, casinos, hotels, and industrial properties. His clients include commercial and investment banks, private equity firms, special servicers, and receivers. Mr. Barksdale left Ballard Spahr earlier this year to join the real estate finance group at Alston & Bird in Los Angeles.

“It is gratifying to have a partner of Dave’s caliber return to the firm,” Mr. Stewart said. “It affirms our belief that, at Ballard, we have created an environment in which excellent lawyers can do their very best work for clients.”

Michael Sklaroff, Chair of Ballard Spahr’s Real Estate Department, said Mr. Barksdale’s return comes at a time when the commercial real estate industry is pursuing new debt and equity opportunities, while still resolving legacy assets. “Dave’s return significantly enhances the services we offer clients out of our Los Angeles office, a key part of the firm’s western real estate practice,” Mr. Sklaroff said. “His talent and energy are highly valued in our practice.”

Mr. Barksdale was previously a partner in Ballard Spahr’s Los Angeles and Las Vegas offices. “I’m looking forward to once again working with the real estate and finance teams in Los Angeles and throughout the firm,” Mr. Barksdale said. “With an expanded team in Los Angeles and the firm’s other western offices, combined with a deep-rooted culture of collaboration and teamwork, Ballard Spahr’s platform is truly unmatched and is well positioned to meet the needs of all clients my team serves.”

Mr. Barksdale is a member of Ballard Spahr’s Commercial Real Estate Recovery, Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Development, REITs, Planned Communities and Condominiums, Resort and Hotel, and Construction Groups.

Also returning to Ballard Spahr’s Los Angeles office with Mr. Barksdale are counsel Robert E. McPeak and associate Alex M. Grigorians. Both are members of the firm’s Real Estate Department.
