Perrie Weiner and Edward Totino join the Firm’s growing Los Angeles office, where Perrie will serve as Partner in Charge and Chair of the North America Securities Litigation Group. Both partners were formerly with DLA Piper, where Perrie previously was co-chair of the securities litigation practice, which has seen significant growth, co-managing partner of the LA offices, which also have grown substantially; and had served on the Executive and Policy Committees.
Perrie represents a wide array of clients in securities litigation and enforcement matters, and in complex business litigation. He advises private equity funds, including hedge funds, broker-dealers, underwriters, placement agents and issuers in SEC and FINRA enforcement proceedings, and in white collar criminal proceedings. In addition, he defends both underwriters and issuers in securities class actions, shareholder derivative actions, and takeover defense litigation. Perrie also has an active complex business litigation practice, including representing a broad spectrum of clients in consumer class actions involving claimed violations of the Right to Privacy (including TCPA and CIPA), Automatic Renewal Law, false and deceptive advertising, Section 17200 and RICO.
In addition to securities litigation, Ed focuses his practice on consumer class actions and complex commercial litigation. He represents a broad spectrum of clients including financial institutions, outsourcing companies, retailers and hotels. In recent years, Ed has defended numerous class actions brought under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the California Invasion of Privacy Act.
“We are very pleased to add these prominent securities litigators to our growing Los Angeles office and North American team,” said Peter Tomczak, Chair of the Firm’s North America Litigation and Government Enforcement Practice Group. “Perrie and Ed bring substantial trial experience and litigation expertise to issues that are important to our key clients, and they complement our existing white-collar, compliance, privacy, and cross-border transactional practices.”
Baker McKenzie’s litigation practice is one the most recognized and largest globally, with more than 850 litigators based in major financial centers and emerging markets worldwide. With a global network, the group is known for its ability to handle multi-jurisdictional litigation and has extensive industry expertise, particularly in the aerospace; consumer goods and retail; energy, mining and infrastructure; financial institutions; healthcare; technology, media and telecoms sectors.
As corporations and financial institutions continue to enter new markets against a backdrop of tighter regulatory scrutiny, higher accountability standards and intense competition, Baker McKenzie’s North America Litigation and Government Enforcement Group helps companies navigate the risks and guides clients through pre-contentious negotiations, helping them choose the best dispute resolution option. The practice provides expert advice at every step of the process, including litigation, international arbitration, and alternative dispute resolution.
“This is a big win for our Los Angeles team and for the Firm as a whole, said Colin Murray, Baker McKenzie’s North American Chief Executive Officer. “We are so excited to have securities litigators of this caliber join us.”
Perrie added, “With its remarkable global footprint, Baker McKenzie provides an optimal platform for our clients and our practice. There are so many exciting things happening at the Firm globally, nationally and regionally; we are particularly looking forward to joining our new colleagues in Los Angeles and building that office into a formidable competitor in the L.A. market. We intend to grow the office by attracting and selectively engaging only the very best, brightest and most collaborative lawyers in the market, in keeping with Baker McKenzie’s global model.”
Perrie received his J.D. from Loyola Law School, Dean’s List, and his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude. Ed received a J.D. from Cornell Law School, as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and a B.A. from the University of Southern California.
