Gina Cavalier has joined Cooley in Los Angeles as a partner in the firm’s business litigation and healthcare regulatory practice groups. Cavalier arrives from King & Spalding with extensive experience in the life sciences industry advising clients on healthcare fraud, abuse and compliance matters.
“Gina is a welcome addition to our growing life sciences regulatory team – and she is an experienced practitioner who will be a great contributor to Cooley’s life sciences practice,” said Cooley’s life sciences industry practice chair Kay Chandler. “As the needs of our client base continue to evolve, and companies increasingly face regulatory and investigative scrutiny throughout their life cycles, her exceptional experience and business-minded skills and approach will be a tremendous benefit to our firm and clients.”
Cavalier’s practice focuses on advising life sciences and healthcare clients, including pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, on complex fraud and abuse issues arising under the Anti-Kickback Statute and other federal and state anti-fraud authorities. She applies her experience to help clients develop and enhance corporate compliance policies and programs and provides strategic advice on the structure of sales and marketing initiatives. Another important component of Cavalier’s practice is helping clients navigate government inquiries and investigations. Additionally, she has deep knowledge of healthcare-related privacy laws and significant experience advising companies on best practices related to sharing sensitive data.
“Cooley’s cross-functional business litigation and healthcare regulatory practices have an impressive reputation throughout the life sciences industry, and I look forward to working with such a distinguished and diverse team,” said Cavalier. “The firm has strategically invested in enhancing its regulatory and investigatory capabilities, and I’m eager to continue working with some of the world’s most interesting and innovative companies as they navigate their growth and development in a continuously evolving regulatory landscape.”
Named a top healthcare lawyer in California by Chambers USA and a life sciences star by LMG Life Sciences, Cavalier has also been recognized by Legal 500 and Daily Journal. She earned her JD from Georgetown Law and, as a member of the US Department of Justice’s Attorney General’s Honors Program, clerked for US Drug Enforcement Administration Chief Administrative Law Judge Mary Ellen Bittner.
Cooley’s top-tier life sciences and healthcare corporate, regulatory and litigation lawyers have extensive US and global experience counseling on a vast scope of complex healthcare deals, regulatory issues and investigations. The firm has represented leading global life sciences companies for 40+ years and advises all players in the ecosystem, including payors, providers, companies, health IT teams and investors. Cooley is regularly recognized as a market leader in the field and has been the #1 firm in issuer-side life sciences IPOs since 2000. Cavalier is the latest in a string of Cooley hires – including senior FDA alum Sonia Nath, who joined the firm’s business litigation and healthcare regulatory practice groups and is based in Washington, DC, and industry veteran Christophe Beauduin, who joined as special counsel in the New York office – to further strengthen the firm’s global life sciences capabilities.
