DLA Piper announced today that David Markman has joined the firm’s Media, Sport and Entertainment sector and Intellectual Property and Technology practice as a partner in Los Angeles, and will also serve as co-chair of the firm’s Entertainment Transactions practice. Markman joins from Greenberg Traurig LLP, where he previously served as a telecommunications policy specialist for the US Department of Commerce in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
Markman maintains a prolific range of practices in the entertainment and sports sectors, including a corporate entertainment practice, a talent practice, and a practice that focuses on celebrity licensing and endorsements, including transactions from both the talent and corporate sides.
Markman represents sports, media and entertainment companies in all aspects of their business activities, and handles entertainment transactional issues from project acquisition and financing to distribution and sales. Additionally, he serves as production counsel, negotiating on behalf of production entities with above and below-the-line talent, bond companies and banks for film and television projects. His practice also includes counseling corporate clients on the integration of their brands into television programming, motion pictures and music projects, as well as forging collaborations between brands and studios and production companies to develop branded content.
“As we continue to expand our capabilities on the West Coast, David will be an excellent addition to our growing media and entertainment team, which also recently welcomed Tom Ara and Rob Sherman,” said Stuart Liner, co-managing partner of DLA Piper in Los Angeles. “We are focused on building a stellar practice with the capacity to represent studios, production companies and agencies, and David’s experience spanning transactional and other entertainment work make him an ideal fit.”
“David’s well-rounded practice and his experience handling a wide variety of matters for both traditional and new media companies will be a tremendous advantage to our clients in the entertainment industry,” said Frank Ryan, global and US co-chair of the firm’s IPT practice and deputy chair of the Media, Sport and Entertainment sector. “We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”
“I am thrilled to join DLA Piper and reunite with my former colleagues, Tom and Rob, as the firm continues building a first-rate entertainment team in Los Angeles,” Markman said. “The opportunity to leverage the firm’s global platform, along with its local commitment to serving the entertainment and media industry, is one I could not pass up.”
Markman received his J.D. from American University Washington College of Law and his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
