Accomplished debt finance and corporate lawyer Mark Spitzer has joined McGuireWoods as a partner in the firm’s downtown Los Angeles office, bringing nearly three decades of experience representing commercial lenders and borrowers in a broad variety of finance transactions.
Spitzer represents money center and regional banks, finance companies and other institutional credit providers in a wide range of financing transactions. His practice includes handling large secured and unsecured syndicated credit facilities, cash flow and asset-based loans, second lien and mezzanine debt financings and debt and equity restructurings.
Spitzer comes to McGuireWoods from the Los Angeles office of Morgan Lewis. He previously was a partner at Bingham McCutchen, which merged with Morgan Lewis in 2014. Spitzer has been ranked by Chambers USA, the widely read guide to leading law firms, each year since 2009, and is listed in IFLR1000’s guide of leading financial lawyers.
“Mark is a valuable addition to our firm and will be a key player in the growth of our West Coast finance practice,” said Raj Natarajan, chair of McGuireWoods’ debt finance practice. “Our clients will benefit immensely from Mark’s deep and varied experience, as well as our team’s presence in downtown Los Angeles.”
Spitzer’s arrival is another step in the firm’s plans to expand the size and capabilities of its downtown Los Angeles office, the firm’s 21st, which opened in April 2015. McGuireWoods has a larger Los Angeles office in Century City.
“We’re delighted to welcome Mark to the firm and excited about our continued growth in downtown Los Angeles,” said Gregory Roberts, managing partner of the downtown Los Angeles office.
Spitzer earned his bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from Wichita State University in 1982. He earned his law degree from Duke University in 1986, graduating with honors.
“McGuireWoods’ debt finance practice has a stellar national reputation and a great team here in Los Angeles,” Spitzer said. “I know my practice will thrive with such a strong platform, and my clients will benefit from the firm’s unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Through the first three quarters of 2015, McGuireWoods ranked third in number of deals and fifth in dollar volume in Thomson Reuters Loan Pricing Corp.’s U.S. Lender Law Firm League Tables for its representation of lead arrangers and bookrunners in syndicated debt financings. The firm recorded 109 transactions valued at $78.7 billion in the first nine months of the year. McGuireWoods has finished each of the last four years ranked among the top 10 U.S. law firms in the league tables that debt finance professionals consider definitive.
McGuireWoods continues to expand its representation of financial institutions with more than 75 debt finance and asset-based lending lawyers in its Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, Richmond and Tysons Corner offices.
