Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, announced today that corporate partner Marc Boiron and litigation partner Rebecca Rettig have joined the firm in its leading financial services group and fintech practice. The team brings unique and deep-rooted expertise representing emerging and growth-stage companies at the forefront of the financial services industry’s digital transformation, as well as traditional financial and technology companies seeking to enter the fintech space. With Rettig based in New York and Boiron in Los Angeles, the team strengthens the firm’s national platform and will work across financial services, M&A, digital and technology, and privacy and data security. They both join the firm from FisherBroyles LLP.
“The environment of uncertainty created by the current health crisis has significantly affected how both the disruptors and the disrupted do business, and the impact of this period of accelerated and extraordinary digitalization among companies—including those in financial services—will likely be felt for years to come,” said Donna L. Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and Managing Partner. “The addition of Marc and Rebecca reflects Manatt’s determination to remain at the forefront of these changes, while simultaneously helping our clients, regardless of their industry, navigate and adapt to the rapidly evolving business and regulatory world in which they currently find themselves.”
Boiron is a leading corporate lawyer and advisor in the thriving blockchain and virtual currency spaces. He is known for deftly and creatively guiding his clients through a variety of issues related to token distributions, financings and regulatory compliance, both for operating companies and investment funds. With special attention to understanding his clients’ businesses and technology, Boiron’s practice is particularly focused on working with early-stage companies who seek to navigate uncertain waters and raise capital through crowdfunding or traditional fundraising. In addition to his fintech work, Boiron, who is admitted in both California and Delaware, has advised companies on numerous complex corporate and governance issues.
Rettig is an accomplished regulatory advisor and complex commercial litigator. Recognized in 2019 as one of the top 100 women lawyers in New York City by Crain’s New York Business, she has successfully represented blockchain and virtual currency companies in litigation, private arbitrations and regulatory enforcement actions. Rettig is especially well-versed in counseling those clients on a variety of regulatory issues. She strategically guides clients through the maze of regulatory regimes applicable to blockchain and virtual currency companies, including the process and compliance requirements related to New York’s BitLicense regulation before the New York Department of Financial Services. She also regularly works with Fortune 100 companies more broadly across all stages of litigation, including on issues related to securities, shareholder derivative, general commercial, contract disputes, and copyright and trademark disputes, among others.
“We were really drawn to Manatt due to its groundbreaking approach to client services, which blends legal and business advisory services, as well as its bench of nationally recognized lawyers, consultants and technologists,” said Boiron. “We believe that the firm’s hybridized platform and collaborative culture will resonate with and be an invaluable resource for our clients as they prepare to tackle any challenge they may face in today’s new, and unprecedented, economy,” Rettig added.
The arrival of Rettig and Boiron further expands Manatt’s financial services and technology offerings, and follows recent hires such as national technology and intellectual property litigation practice leader Amar L. Thakur, former Commissioner of the California Department of Business Oversight Jan L. Owen, consumer financial services litigation and fintech partner Scott M. Pearson, co-leader of Manatt’s privacy and data security practice Scott T. Lashway, digital and technology partner Eric P. Bergner, venture capital and emerging companies partner Richard G.J. McDerby and associate Christopher M. Dayans, and financial services special counsel Anthony Schouten.
Rettig earned her juris doctorate from Columbia University School of Law, her master’s in science from London School of Economics, and her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.
